679521 2008-06-17 21:38:00 Hi Guys

The Greens are bringing in a bill to ban the sale of incandescnat bulbs.

This sucks

My name is Green, but...

I do not think Compact Fluros are the sole answer.

I have fitted a few in my house and am very pleased with them, they do seem to last longer than incandescants.

But in some situations they are not very good.

Eg their light quality for reading is not so good.

I use 200W bulbs in my workshop and the only 200w CF's I could buy were terrible, they were very bluish, and gave out a low light level.

I do not like Nanny State dictating to us. Why not look at other ways to encourage CF's usage.

What do you think ?

679522 2008-06-17 21:40:00 Drop the price of CFLs to be the same as incandescent ones and market the advantages of CFLs more. That should encourage people to change over to them.

My house has all CFLs except those that have dimmers attached - you can't dim CFLs. :groan:

679523 2008-06-17 21:53:00 There are places where incandescent is a better option. I agree, give people a carrot, not a stick. The greens do seem very keen on the stick approach to life.

We use a lot of the long life bulbs in the house but there are places where they just don't work.

And here's a thought.

There are places in my house where there is just one light bulb. If I use incandescent, it is adequate. If I use long life, it's too dark.

So if if you stop me being able to use incandescent bulbs what will I do? I'll get a sparky to put more lights in the room of course! Wow, that's a triumph for common sense, isn't it.

679524 2008-06-17 22:26:00 I hate them. They take a while to go fully bright.
They look incredibly ugly - do they have to be weird shapes?
And the greens think mercury is OK now?

Why not do more with LEDs instead? LEDs are cool.

679525 2008-06-17 22:34:00 We have got them in most rooms in the house now and I am quite happy with them. The only place where I have found they do not work is the outside light beside the front and back doors. They take too long to go from dim to bright - you want lights that go ON when you turn them on at outside doors, and incandescent lights do that.

We have got a little pile of incandescent light bulbs that were still working when we replaced them with the new things, so I will just hang on to them for outside light replacements.

I am not sure why people are finding CFL lamps too dim once they have "warmed up". We have replaced 100 watt bulbs with 20 watt, and 75 watt with 15 watt, and I don't see any difference.

679526 2008-06-17 23:00:00 The proposition is outrageous!

If we need to save power, thanks to some awful forward planning by the Government, then why not turn off all the unused commercial lighting in our cities?

Take a look around Auckland after midnight and you’ll find Megawatts of wasted power in large office blocks, advertising hoardings and shopping displays .

Also, the waste of power in the Beehive along with the Carbon and Hot Air emissions should be addressed . :angry

I agree . Except for ones with dimmers, we have replaced all . A bit dim and green to start with, they come right in a minute or so .

I feel a dimmer capable alternative would be good . I have 6 downlights on dimmers in the lounge and I tell my wife that she could run a small heater for the power they use when all are on full . (600W total) Perhaps halogen would be the answer . I am visiting my retired sparky Brother In Law on the weekend so will ask .

679528 2008-06-18 00:36:00 It said in The Press yesterday am that you could get some of the new lamps that are suitable for dimmers, but I didn't take much notice cos we don't use them.

We use chair-side lamp standards for reading and watching TV, and in the bedrooms ditto. Similarly we have desk lamps beside computers. The overhead lights get very little use except in the kitchen, so there is no point in dimmers for us.

679529 2008-06-18 01:30:00 We have them pretty much everywhere,

For light quality it seems to depend on the brand, the horrible blue cold light seems to come from the really cheap ones

For the light intensity I have replaced (at least in the lounge) the 100w incandescent with a 23w cfl (which is supposedly equivalent to 115W incandescent) as the 20w cfl seemed just that little bit dimmer than the 100w incandescent

I do think the shapes are a bit odd, however you can get cfls shaped like normal bulbs, i have one of those somewhere around the house

The only thing that annoys me is that i do think the Govt needs to address the recycling issue.

Actually, there are two 'colours' that I know of.

"Cool White" is the slightly yellow one which IMO is preferable in most situations. Similar colour to standard incandescent lamps.
"Cool Daylight" is the bluish one which is supposedly better for working on things like paintings where you want it to look the same under your lighting as it will do outside.

They usually tell you which colour it is on the box.

I don't think it's anything to do with cheapness. :)
