where do i find what sort it needs? are there different sorts? and where else apart from trademe can you source the bags?

I have used one before, but never owned one......... so a new electric learning curve for beetle :p

679200 2008-06-17 04:05:00 Welcome back :)
The Kirbys can suck pretty well, but the price of the bags can suck far more strongly if you go to the wrong shop. Buying them in retail Vacuum Cleaner specialty shops is worse than buying petrol.
These (www.cleanware.co.nz) people are better priced than a lot of others (They are probably not the ultimate value deal, just the best I found a while back.)

Warning - very Sucky :spam

679201 2008-06-17 04:56:00 Hello Beetle,

Have a look in your yellow pages for Kirby Sales and Service, there may be a local agent, or if not, then an 0800 number you can phone. R2x1 is right, the bags cost an arm and a leg. I used to buy mine in bulk so I only had to groan at the price once in a while.

I traded my old kirby a year or so ago..threw in all my unused bags, as well, or would have been happy to send them to you. The cleaner is good, but they are heavy and with stairs I found it to be inconvenient for my needs.

Cheers,
Marnie

679203 2008-06-17 06:16:00 Dump that $$-sucker and get a GOOD HEPA-type filtered upright .

Kirbys here are sold by defrocked used car salesmen who are staying just one step ahead of the local sheriff .

I personally like the newer upright canister without-a-bag types .

You can find used Kirbys here at yard or garage sales for 1/100th of their original cost . They sit and don't get sold them either . Overpriced, hyped pieces of junk .

679204 2008-06-17 12:07:00 Real Kirby bags cost as much as real estate, but generic bags are not such a fiscal drag by a good margin. They still let the suck out and keep the dirt in, so I guess that is all one can ask. Our cleaner doesn't take bags, just uses a crafty strainer thing to grab the dust. Probably can't suck anything like a Kirby, but not as noisy either. The outlet filter is washable, so it is pretty cheap to run. Luckily we don't have any allergy problems, so we can get away with less raw power. (Or should that be 'roar" power?) R2x1 (4628)
679205 2008-06-17 22:00:00 SJ is spot on with all points.

Vacuums that have HEPA filters are the way to go, and these days you can find new ones cheap.

But be sure to clean the inner (HEPA) filter. Read the instruction book. I was at a friend's house last week and noticed there was a brand new vacuum that cost him $500. I was puzzled because he just bought a new HEPA vacuum last year. He said the other one did not have enough suck. "Did you clean the inner filter?" I asked him, resisting the temptation to add "LIKE I TOLD YOU TO DO WHEN YOU BOUGHT IT?" He looked at me blankly, so I went to the vacuum he bought last year and showed him the totally clogged inner filter. What a waste of money, buying that new $500 vacuum!

679206 2008-06-17 22:20:00 Yes i know........ i have a bagless machine and find it tiresome as it doesnt hold a good suck after the tank is about a 1/4 full, its messy to emptt and the round filter is hard to keep clean. and i have clogged / blocked more times than i have used it.
i have in the past used kirbys and found them to make a difference in my house for dust and my sons health.
so i thought id give it a go.
if it doesnt work, well trademe works for me.

my budget will not reach one of those upright thingys, sadly my sister just bought one on a whim......... and well she makes life difficult, with her spending compared to mine............ but will take note as she grumbles about those things quickly....is its no good i could offer to take it off her hands maybe........... ??

im just checking out options, using the budget i have and the experience and if it works good if it doesnt, well then i have learnt something new.

i have been in this house since january and have had the carpets cleaned twice, since being here, once before the move and once after......... its a time consuming and costly job............ and its not always making a difference, and new carpet isnt an option.says the landlord.

allergy free is difficult to establish.
and since ive been sick lots, keeping the house clean or that stuff, has been a mission im failing........ and now on sick leave from a hospital visit am not able to do it at all, and so its that viscoius circle thing.

679207 2008-06-17 22:51:00 You say you are sick and recently returned from some sortta medical intervention . . yet you don't seem to mind lugging, tugging and shoving that dinosaur of a vacuum around .

Those Kirbys are heavy . . full castings and heavy enough to require using the forward drive, which fails after a short while anyway .

My fav at the moment is an upright called a Eureka Optima . It's an upright and doesn't need the HEPA filter as it has a really good filtration system in the bowl which it also uses as a repository for the dirt/debris . The filters are replaceable or washable . . your choice .

The cost of the Eureka is really REALLY low . Check here ( . qvc . com/qic/qvcapp . aspx/view . 2/app . detail/params . aol_refer . false . tpl . detail . msn_refer . false . . just don't toss it down a flight of stairs and you'll be happy with it .

679208 2008-06-17 23:23:00 Yeah it seems i like doing things the hard way .

and i dont find them too heavy, i have a single story house, and children who can vac for me . . . . . . . . . . . .

at the moment anything that entails, breathing, eating, drinking, in the mouth or nose, is extremely hazardus, i am not allowed under any circumstances to sneeze . . . . . . . . . . . . too many stiches . . . . . . internal in the nose, and external holding it together as well, and the tonsils have gone, so life is a pian in the neck, and at 4am the pain hits the highest level .
i get dizzy when i walk to fast, or bend, of do any movement to fast, trying to get dressed is a feat, socks . . . . . . . . . i know longer worry about doing up the shoes . . . . . . . . .

life goes on,

and if this idea doesnt work . . . . . . . next machine i will try will be a hepa filter . . . . thing .

and yes i quite understand what youre getting at SJ, but i guess i dont have enough life experience to know better . . . . . . .
