679154 2008-06-17 02:06:00 Hi Guys

It seems that most broadband plan upload speeds are limited to 128 kbps ?

Why is the upload speed so much slower than the download speed ?
I do not upload much or want to, but occasionally I do and it is very tedious !

Is there some technical reason or once again is it Telecom ripping us off ?

I am on a full speed plan with Actrix.

679155 2008-06-17 02:23:00 It's Southern Cross holding everyone to ransom. :( Not really anything to do with Telecom.

Pay more for a faster upload.

It would be nice if we had the option for 2mb up/down type connections, rather than full down/128k up.

679156 2008-06-17 02:29:00 You get what you pay for Digby.

You can get higher upload speeds if you need that depending on your ISP and where you are and other factors.

A quick check reveals this:-

Do you want to pay $496 a month?

That's for unlimited data. You can get a FS/FS plan from Actrix for $80 from the site you linked to.

That what the A in ADSL means - Asymmetric

679161 2008-06-17 06:06:00 It seems that most broadband plan upload speeds are limited to 128 kbps ? That's because someone (ISP's) who decided when Broadband first became available, that most people would be downloading not uploading, So the higher provision speed for downloads.
BUT times have changed, and many people now need higher upload speeds - but when the ISP's will realise that is any ones guess.:D

679162 2008-06-17 12:40:00 I get why we have lower upload speeds as compared with downloads. And yes, there are FS/FS plans too!

But why, on the limited upload speed plans, are we limited to such a measly 128kbps???? Surely, FS/512kbps would be MUCH more reasonable! Or at least 384kbps for uploads???

679163 2008-06-17 13:38:00 ADSL divides the channel in to fixed uplink and downlink proportions, with the uplink proportion being much smaller. The theoretical maximum for normal ADSL is 1Mbps but combined with interference in the network equipment itself, poorly maintained cabling and long distances to exchanges this can drop fast.

If you want faster upload speeds you'll have to avoid ADSL providers. This means using a wireless, satellite, cable or fibre-optic internet provider. Wireless and sattelite often have terrible latency issues, there's only one cable provider with limited coverage and fibre is even harder to get without being in central Wellington or Auckland and having $1k a month to spare.
