| 810174 | 2009-09-14 18:06:00 | It looks like this is a "too-large" upgrade and it falls on it's butt when I try . It might also be a quantum leap for it too to try . Options? 1) Remove 7 . 04 all the way and just install 9 . 06 but that means formatting the whole drive and kinda destroys the dual-boot scene I want . 2) force an upgrade by running the following command using Alt+F2: kdesudo "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade" 3) Run both 7 . 04 and 9 . 06 with XP as a kicker thru grub . (This is kinda silly though) OK - suppose I choose to install 9 . 06 and then delete 7 . 04 . Is it possible to reuse the partition area that is now dedicated to 7 . 04? Is there a utility that can reclaim that partition?I now have 8 partitions and would like to clean things up . BTW: Both Ubuntus are now working good . So is XP, but it always did . BBTW: I'm having fun with my puters again! Yippee! |

The best for this is "Gparted that can be download and then burnt to a CD. It will show all yr partitions and you can extend or delete and reformat any of them. Extending can take a bit of time tho. As for Ubuntu if you install 9.04 to yr present Ubuntu partition you will be asked if you want to save the 7.04 settings.Say ok then yr new 9.04 will be all honky dory. Also once you are set up again I think there is a disk partitioner available in Ubuntu so you can use that to play with partitions |

What I don't understand is that if it set it's won partitions up, why cannot it create a large enough swap-file to accomplish what it needs? That may be an academic question/statement now as I am going for a full wipe and clean install of Ubuntu 9.06 and will just use all 80gig of the hdd1 |

| 810178 | 2009-09-14 22:58:00 | Thanks Gary, I'm running dban.iso to wipe the whole hdd and then I'll start from scratch. This isn't as bad as it may seem to youse guys - this is a play puter and even though it has a pretty good processor, I'll likely dedicate it to Ubuntu when I am through playing. Thanks for bearing with me here - this is still a steep (almost vertical) learning curve for me and I have decided to enjoy myself along the way. |

Stick with it and you will find it great. |

The list of linux OS's is pretty long and we all have our favorites.Just stick with Ubuntu for a while and learn the ropes. |
