809671 2009-09-13 04:57:00 Don't laugh - I'm gonna try this on a totally different puter now. :clap

It's a Compaq with 1/2 gig of Ram and a 2.2 MHZ processor if memory serves me. I ran it LIVE and it worked, so I want to know if I need to use the "Guided" partition manager or not.

The puter is waiting for a decision but it seems to be fairly patient.

809672 2009-09-13 05:00:00 Not sure what a guided partition is but if its the only thing going on it then just install click click click wham desktop! hueybot3000 (3646)
809673 2009-09-13 05:00:00 If this computer just has one disk in it, and you're happy for that disk to be wiped, go with guided.

If this is that 9-disk monstrosity you were trying to install Linux on a while back, you'll have to go with manual.

If you have anything else, tell us what it is so we can give you some informed advice.

Edit: I wish you all the best with getting any sort of performance out of a 2.2MHz CPU

809674 2009-09-13 05:01:00 Not sure what a guided partition is...
He's talking about the Ubuntu installer's autopartitioning wizard.

809675 2009-09-13 05:07:00 OK - I am trying to get it to prepare a section and it keeps on asking me questions and saying that I haven't specified a partition for the root system mount point (whatever that is) and it needs a "/" in front of it and I cannot get a "/" in the drop-down menu and now it says:

"No root file system is defined . Please correct this from the partitioning menu . "(wherever that is) .

This puter has a very good XP-Home w/SP3 and ever possible update on a 80G hdd, so I know it has plenty of room .

I want to get this to dual boot - and although I've had tragedies in the past (lost a RAID JBOD with over 3,000 MP3s and tons of videos), this is NOT the same puter this time .

809676 2009-09-13 05:13:00 Here we go again... can you cancel the changes, start the partitioning again, and take photos of each stage as you go. Upload each photo, and wait for a response here after each photo, *before* continuing or saving anything! Erayd (23)
809677 2009-09-13 05:19:00 Photos? He wants me to C/P from a live disc and send photos?

I undid the changes and am waiting for EXPLICIT INSTRUCTIONS from anyone here with a sense of chivalry, adventure and daring-do!

Remember that I have NOT had my Vegemite today either!

809678 2009-09-13 05:24:00 If you can't figure out the screenshot thing on the live cd, then just get out the digital camera and snap some pics of the monitor.

The reason I ask is:
You'd already deviated from the instructions I posted earlier in the thread (i.e. if it's anything else, tell us and then wait for advice).
Last time I gave you a set of explicit instructions you didn't follow them properly and ended up on a very weird tangent.
You have a track record of problems with Linux, especially as regards partitioning, and often issues that nobody else encounters.
Not intending any offense here, but I think in this case extreme hand-holding is warranted.

809679 2009-09-13 05:32:00 I have just washed my hands too - dang it!

I am at a holding pattern at Step 4 of 7, where it asks me to Prepare Partitions, and it's just sitting there .

Here's what's on the data window at the mo:

/dev/hda

/dev/hda1 - fat32 /media hda1 - 3893MB (Size) 3100MB (Used)
/dev/hda2 - ntfs /media/hdfa2 - 76121MB (Size) 23300MB (Used)
free space ----------------------7MB

809680 2009-09-13 05:38:00 There is an alternative in the guided partitioning menu which says something like.
"shrink the windows partition and install to the freed up space"
Quite simple really.
