As for applications that work on the iPhone - that has been well and trully taken care of with the 3G iPhone and the Apps store/SDK As for the $1000 price tag, that only applied to the 1st Gen iPhone. Do you remember when the first 10/15/20GB iPods appeared in NZ back in late 2003. They were priced at around $900 initially and only a few people had them. People originally said that iPod was an acronym for Idiots Price Our Devices - now 5 years later and you can't walk down the street or through a uni campus without seeing people listening to or watching their iPods which have gone way up in capacity and way down in price. Otago Uni now has an official podcast setup on iTunes. Expect the same type of scenario with the iPhone and the software that gets developed and sold as a result of the SDK and App store. The only reason Ipod sell so well in NZ are because a majority of the shops in nz don't sell a verity of other mp3 players. With everyone buying ipods and saying how great it is .It actually makes people buy them without thinking that ipod is average. I'm saving money to buy myself an archo 605 at the moment.I don't find ipod's sound quality exceptionally good.Just average and as for the wheel.I hate it |

If it wasn't then one or several of the other mp3 players would be "leading the pack" - they aren't. I agree with you that some of the other models may have better sound quality than the iPod, what they don't have how ever is better software and a better over all hardware and UI design that all works together and is otherwise known as the complete package. That is what the other manufactures "don't get". Judging by the totally crap quality of music that some teens are happy to listen to on their cell phones I think I can safetly say that "quality" music or audio codecs are not the top priority on a customer's mind when buying an mp3 player. The priorities would be: Is it an iPod Does it play mp3s Can I download from Limewire onto my iPod Do they come in <prefered colour> Will it work on my PC Does it look cool Is it easy to use. If customers wanted to listen to quality music codecs they wouldn't be listening to low bit rate mp3 files. |

I'll get in before everyone else and point out that by that logic, Windows would be the best overall operating system. Sometimes the best product will sell more units, sometimes it won't. It really depends on price, quality and public perception. In saying that, I firmly believe that the iPod is the best product for most people: Easy to use, looks good and good audio quality (its possible that others might output higher quality audio, but if most people don't buy good headphones or listen to low bitrate music, then it isn't really a factor to be considered). |

| 679381 | 2008-06-21 04:54:00 | I'll get in before everyone else and point out that by that logic, Windows would be the best overall operating system. I can clarify that one for you maccrazy ;) Windows is the highest selling OS because people are familiar with it so that is what they buy when they upgrade their PCs although when you chuck a bit of competition into the mix - something that was seriously lacking in the 90's(among other things) kids who have had Macs at school have a higher chance of staying with Macs when they move into a computer related work environment. Back on topic If you want a Prepay iPhone get it from O2 in the UK Meanwhile O2 confirmed that "prepay iPhones" are also to be sold at Apple retail, O2 and Carphone warehouse. These unsubsidized prepay iPhones will not require a contract but are expected to cost around £350. Cost for a subsidized iPhone 3G from O2 ranges from Free to £99 for the 8GB model and from Free to £159 for the 16GB model depending on the service plan chosen. For reference, the original iPhone was priced at £269. |

| 679382 | 2008-06-21 07:45:00 | I see. So let me clarify this. iPod = the best because it sells the most. Windows = the worst because it sells the most. I wish I was a Mac user so I could understand what it must feel like to be in a constant state of complete stupidity. |

I wish I was a Mac user so I could understand what it must feel like to be in a constant state of complete stupidity. A couple of things that you are ignoring there Beeswax as usual What competiton Windows didn have when it was released it eliminated or hobbled via any means possible. Windows is an OS only. What keeps Windows selling? Existing platform size, support and user familarity the BIGGEST reason of all. 2nd there were other music playing softwares, devices and codecs available when the iPod was released - it initally used software licensed from MusicMatch to play music until Apple came out with iTunes a few months later. 3rd Apple didn't need or use any illegal means to sell or market the iPod when it was released and virtually ALL if the competing portable music players that have come out since have fallen by the way side due to lack of sales. What keeps the iPod selling - sales, newer updated improved models released at regular intervals and the fact that none of the competition is designed to or works like the iPod/iTunes combo does. |

Alas, too much of that may cause a bit of a buzz, but eventually leave a sour taste in the mouth. (Life may seem tough now, but if you get a Zune, you will view things differently.) :spam :ban |

| 679385 | 2008-06-21 09:11:00 | 2nd there were other music playing softwares, devices and codecs available when the iPod was released - it initally used software licensed from MusicMatch to play music until Apple came out with iTunes a few months later . WRONG The software that was the basis for iTunes was developed by Jeff Robbin and Bill Kincaid as a media player called SoundJam MP,[29] and released by Casady & Greene in 1999 . It was purchased by Apple in 2000, given a new user interface and the ability to burn CDs, had its recording feature and skin support removed, and released as iTunes in January 2001 . [30] Originally a Mac OS 9-only application, Mac OS X support was added with the release of version 2 nine months later,[31] and Mac OS 9 support was dropped with the release of version 3 . [32] In October 2003, with the release of iTunes 4 . 1, Apple added support for Microsoft's Windows 2000 and Windows XP . iTunes 7 . 1, introduced in March 2007[33] added support for Windows Vista, and 7 . 4 marked the end of Windows 2000 support . iTunes lacked support for 64-bit versions of Windows until the 7 . 6 update on January 16, 2008 . iTunes currently fully works and is supported under any 64-bit version of Windows Vista, but not the 64-bit versions of Windows XP or Windows Server 2003; though not supported by Apple a workaround has been discovered for both operating systems .
