809805 2009-10-10 19:42:00 Bugger, seems like a pretty generic error :(

Just downloaded the x64 Home Premium from Technet (Works a subscriber now and has given us a key just for her), will give that a go installing within the next 24 hours hopefully.

Poor woman, I just want her laptop to be working, it was supposed to be a nice gift, but it's just been a pain for her really :(

809806 2009-10-10 23:01:00 Basically every time it booted up and was missing the systray icons, we knew it wouldn't shut

down. Unfortunately there was no way of knowing when it would or would not show the systray

icons. Pretty much 100% of the time at the end there though it was *not* showing them..

So, todays journey begins:

I re-installed Win7 from the x64 Home Premium RTM.
Initial reboots during install work fine. Upon boot, we activated and installed all

recommended AND optional updates (Optional updates including all the drivers etc). That

reboot failed. Booted up to do a System Restore, which failed, it had some really funny error

like "Catastrophically failed", tried to reboot again after that, and it also failed just as

before.

Re-installed yet again, reboots during the installation work, and without any updates

installed I did three reboots.

First reboot, no worries, all systray icons fine too.
Second I shut it down, not a problem, shutdown in all of a couple of seconds! Excellent!
Let it boot up, it took a bit longer than expected but not by much. Restarted again, good as

gold.

Now, time to install Chrome and remove IE.
So, off to google.com/chrome to get the latest Beta. Installed just fine. Rebooted just to

make certain it wasn't gonna bugger things up, it didn't. Systray icons still 100%.

Now during the first re-isntall earlier this morning I removed IE8 etc just like I did now. I

hadn't no first setup a few weeks ago though. I'm just saying this so we know it's ruled out

and isn't the cause.
IE8 removed, as well as Media Center, Tablet Components and XPS Services.
Restarted and everything was all good :)
Restarted again, just-in-case, still all good.

Windows update time!
Set to Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
Told it to give me Recommended updates the same way I receive important ones also.
Unticked the first: TOSHIBA - Other Hardware - TOSHIBA x64 ACPI-Compliant Value Added Logical

and General Purpose Device (28KB)
Also unticked "Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB974332)
Just installed Malicious Software Removal Tool Sept 2009 (KB890830) and Defender Updates

(KB915597) (Def 1.67.543.0)
No recommended driver updates installed at this point, doing them slowly to make sure I find

the update thats killing the machine. By now I'm pretty darn certain its the TOSHIBA ACPI

update thats buggering it up.

Anyways, updates installed, restart not required but I do one anyway. Machine reboots, not a

hitch! Im stoaked!
Installed the Intel Display driver, restarted, still all fine :)

Now installed Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB974332) (1.7MB). Restarted even

though it didn't need it and it's fine still.

Installed the rest of the optional driver updates:
CXT - Network - HDAudio SoftData Fax Modem with Smart CP
Realtek - Network - Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
Realtek Semiconductor Copr. - Storage - Realtek USB2.0 Card Reader
Synaptics - Input - Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad

Anyway I went to shut it down after two restarts (Did two just to make sure it was going) and it hung just like before :( So I'm guessing its one of the four previous updates.

Have to rush off to lunch, so will try and rollback then remove all the last four and install them one by one ...

809807 2009-10-10 23:33:00 I would install /see if there are drivers on toshiba's site. Dont install any drivers from windowsupdate from within windows Speedy Gonzales (78)
809808 2009-10-10 23:37:00 Good trouble shooting Kemosabe:clap KarameaDave (15222)
809809 2009-10-11 01:15:00 Nah nothing on the Toshiba site.

Long story short, its the bloody CF drivers.

Re-installed windows again, but this time as I installed I'd do a driver, then restart, then shut down, then restart again -- JUST to be certain :D

As soon as the Realtek CF Cardreader driver was installed, it broke it.

Now regardless of if anythings plugged in or not, it still dies on shutdown. Disabled it in the Device Manager and BOOM! Instant success!

Not sure who's fault this is, Realtek, Toshiba or Microsoft, but I'm not very impressed to say the least.
That said, it all appears to be working after a GREAT big saga, so I'm happy, and when I've re-installed everything I'm sure the wifey will be also :)

809810 2009-10-11 01:26:00 Hmm I spose I could say the same for normal card readers. I know with this desktop (since Ive got an internal reader), computer can hang, when you use the sendto option (because the shortcuts to the reader) are in there.

If I select sendto (to send whatever to the other PC's here). It expects to (or tries to read whats in the slots (which is nothing). There is a fix for this (it hides the slots for the reader (under the sendto option).

You can either edit the registry (there maybe a reg file somewhere), which will make it easier. And then it wont hang. The only good thing (I spose), is previously (with XP), everytime I reinstalled, I had to unplug the reader.

Otherwise the install would see it as a removable drive, and call it C after XP had installed. Then obviously, most things wouldn't work, because even tho programs could see C, there wasnt enough room

809811 2009-10-11 01:56:00 :D

I don't mind having it disabled, and I don't think she'll care too. She's got a USB Multi-cardreader which she's used up until she got this laptop and she's OK with that :)

Not quite what I expected would be causing the issues, but now it's disabled we've installed all other updates, installed the essentials like Office, Security Essentials, iTunes, Chrome, removed the unwanted Windows features etc and it still shuts down perfectly :) No missing systray icons either :D

So, any ideas where to start in terms of contacting the appropriate vendors about fixing this?
