680060 2008-06-20 05:02:00 it'll price them off the road - or rather force them to drive uninsured

fact is driving is a privilege, not a right

Yes that is the problem, we are going to end up with quite a lot of uninsured people on the road driving illegally, proably mainly young people. NZs culture is that driving is a right of passage, which sort of shows with the fact that many young people pimp up their cars and many then become boy racers, and they are also influenced by movies where they do this.

680061 2008-06-20 05:13:00 the falseness of that stereotype simply angers me - and i think alot of the hip-hop scene does more than the movies does (including this LA 'gangta' bull sh*t kids like to latch onto)

MOST young people can't afford to do that **** to their cars, and agree that it's just stupid to do so. the most common thing is a half-decent sound system and leave it at that. next is the stupid fad of chrome mags worth more than the car

many do do up old escorts etc, many do up cars - not many hoon them and many who hoon them do not pimp them

most pimped car drivers are too afraid they'll damage it or be picked up by the cops to actually hoon them

of course there are idiots, but theres an equal number of 40 year olds driving V8s like they own the road too (and if it's an old beat up V8 you can be assured they're uninsured)

680062 2008-06-20 05:53:00 I dislike the idea of being banged into by an uninsured bod, then me having to fork out because of the lack on insurance of said bod.

This does not appeal at all.

680063 2008-06-20 07:27:00 that's why i have full comprehensive cover

let insurance chase it up

had one incident where my bike, ridden by my 3rd party cover only brother, was written off by an uninsured, unlicenced 15 year old in a beat up 4WD doing a u-turn. long story short she had to pay heavy fines while acc paid injuries (and still is) and 3 successful visits to small claims later we got nothing for a $3k bike, which is ALOT of money for a 16 year old to lose

full cover ever since

680064 2008-06-21 10:57:00 The argument that compulsory third party insurance coupled to motor vehicle registration will not work because there is too many unregistered vehicles and unlicenced drivers on the road, is nothing short of a cop out.
If New Zealand is to have an orderly society, then laws should be for the common good and they must be enforced.

The problem with dealing with persistent offenders who drive unregistered vehicles, and drive unlicenced is it takes effort by the traffic police to catch them. It is obvious to anyone other than an apologist for the government and the police, that the emphasis of traffic enforcement is on collecting the easy dollars, ie most bang for the buck, not on really sorting out endemic problems in persistent traffic offending by a section of the community.
When these persistent offenders are are caught the court system frequently lets them off too lightly, seldom do penalties realistically deal with the problem, for example, offending drivers building up high 4 figures and five figures of unpaid fines, they should have been put inside as an example to those of there thinking. One can't help but come to the opinion that traffic fines are for the law abiding majority who will shut up and pay up, and for those who don't give a stuff they can continue to do as they please with impunity.
If driving while disqualified was treated as contempt of court, and the sentences handed down for that offence were dished out for driving while disqualified, perhaps the message would get home.

680067 2008-06-21 12:37:00 Of course Aussie cops were very good at strutting around enforcing the easy to police laws while turning a blind eye to their criminal mates with money. PaulD (232)
680068 2008-06-21 13:22:00 So is any person here able to draft a law which is enforceable, does not contravene current Acts or Regulations or Amendments thereof and then get it passed through Parliament?

I guess most people know what is right but if you have the right lawyer you may be able to get away with anything.

I think that every vehicle should be insured with FULL cover never mind third party. If it is not fully insured then you should not be able to buy it in the first place.

As it transpired yesterday I walked through a car park and noticed nine cars without a current registration. Did not check warrants.

680069 2008-06-21 20:44:00 If third party was made compulsory, it should be part of the registration/WOF process - no evidence of insurance, no rego. And, caught with no rego - crush the vehicle, with or without the owner/driver in the driver's seat.

You must have been a nazi in a previouse life..
