679551 2008-06-18 21:36:00 Are halogen bulbs classed as incandescents, and will they be banned as well? We have two desklamps and five bedside lamps that use halogen bulbs - if those bulbs are banned, I assume the lamps will all be useless when the bulbs cark it? Perhaps I had better stock up a few spares if that is the case.

And as someone else said above, the rangehood and oven have lamps for which I have seen no CF replacements... This could get expensive, and I am not prepared to throw out a perfectly good rangehood and oven just to be green.

679553 2008-06-18 23:01:00 I hate them. They take a while to go fully bright.
They look incredibly ugly - do they have to be weird shapes?
And the greens think mercury is OK now?

Yes, the same environmentalists who complained about mercury in the past are now pooh poohing and trying to minimise the mercury issue.

Why not do more with LEDs instead? LEDs are cool.

LEDs are superior to CFLs but they cost more. Why? Because people are buying CFLs. Why? Because they're cheaper than LEDs. Ok, this may be an oversimplification, but governments' easy-way-out decision to promote CFLs has alot to do with the market and developmental position of LEDs. Governments don't care about the mercury issue. What they care about is quickly reducing their Kyoto bill, as there is no Kyoto bill for mercury pollution, unlike with C02.

When I looked a couple of months ago for LEDs there was little on the market in NZ except a couple of low end bulbs with an unusual pinout.

There is no reason to ban incandescents. If they really want to discourage their use, they could just place an import levy to make them expensive enough that people would only use them where they really want or need them, like reading lamps, walk-in freezer or the toilet.

Mercury bulbs are "eco bulbs", lead paint is "eco paint"... :ban

Oh no. That's too sensible. You'll never make it in politics with that kind of thinking.

679555 2008-06-18 23:50:00 I just realized: what about stage lighting? What about street lights? What about projector bulbs? What about floodlights? Stadium lighting (aka AMI stadium)? Eco bulbs may work well in some situations, but anything other than domestic lighting, and they can't keep up. ubergeek85 (131)

What about the new business of parallel importing incandescent bubs ....:)

679557 2008-06-19 00:24:00 Wouldn't that be black market bulbs? ubergeek85 (131)

Very true. It will be like Prohibition all over again.

679559 2008-06-19 00:46:00 Yeah , right, by the time the CFL security light lights up, the burglar probably have walked around the house twice, broke in and gone.

Not to mention traffic lights and flashing pedestrians crossing lights :D

Some new traffic lights are actually LED lights, but it's odd, some old intersections have them, and some new ones don't.
