679184 2008-06-19 11:50:00 Indeed..... just switched to TelstraClear cable and couldn't be happier - 4m/sec down and 2m/sec up . Might consider upgrading to 10m/sec down if the current cap isn't enough (all plans with a cap over 10G have a 10m/sec downstream speed).
I kinda doubt you can get 2 megs upload via adsl... I think it's impossible here in NZ. Cable may be different of course.

When I transfer files (upload) via FTP I get best 6 - 800 kb/s, which is pretty much acceptable.

679185 2008-06-19 11:53:00 My router tells me I could get 859 Kbps up.. IF it wasn't capped to 166.. oh well Agent_24 (57)

Which is why I have 2mb/sec upload. They used to offer even higher upload speeds, but they don't seem to these days, I'm not sure why.

679187 2008-06-19 22:02:00 Didn't the commerce commission specify minimum connection speeds? I thought this is where the piddly 128k upload speed came from. It's probably the minimum Telecom can get away with, there's no real limitation with ADSL as such - it can go a good deal faster than 128k. autechre (266)
679188 2008-06-30 04:43:00 That's because someone (ISP's) who decided when Broadband first became available, that most people would be downloading not uploading, So the higher provision speed for downloads.
BUT times have changed, and many people now need higher upload speeds - but when the ISP's will realise that is any ones guess.:D

For us to download something someone has to be uploading it from somewhere, so therefore we can only download as fast as someone elses upload speed.

Also at work we are having trouble with slow Broadband. Our download speeds are through the roof, however our upload are usually only 60-70 kbps.
We are with Maxnet, on the Max download/and 128 upload.

here are some speedtests from www.speedtest.net.

speedtest #1 Auckland done 27/06/08 (www.speedtest.net)

Speedtest #2 Wellington done 27/06/08 (www.speedtest.net)

Speedtest #3 Adelaide done 27/06/08 (www.speedtest.net)

Speedtest #4 Napier Done 27/06/03 (Speedtest #4 Napier Done 27/06/03)

Speedtest #5 Auckland 2nd time done 27/06/08 (www.speedtest.net) Between my first auckland test and the 2nd one was about 6 mins.

Speedtest #6 done Auckland 30/06/08 (www.speedtest.net)

I have done many over the past week and they say about the same for upload speed, (Im not worried about the Downlaod speed cos as you can see it's pretty good.)

I dont know if the upload speed is the problem, cos I can get onto some sites alright and some I cannot. I can't even get onto our ISP's website it gets to about halfway and just sits there, I can't access my Gmail from work for the same reason, all the sites I need to log onto I sign in and then it just sits there Half loaded.
I have phoned them up and they have been very helpful and trying to sort out the problem (I'm not complaining about there help. There service is 2nd to none).

Any Ideas???

Correct, at one point about a year ago my 10MB/2MB cable connection actually went 10MB/10MB and I was able to upload at 10MB confirmed my 'actual' uploads and Speedtest.net, after about a week they obviously fixed the throttling and it returned to 2MB up, so I can confirm Telstra cable can do at least 10MB uploads NP should they offer it.

679191 2008-07-02 22:43:00 Try this test: www2.verizon.net

Thanks
I have just tried it and it says my Download speed it 975 kbps (alot slower than my speedtest results, see below) and Upload is 121 kbps.

but i just tried a speedtest on speedtest.net and here are the results (www.speedtest.net)

Why is there such a difference.

I am still having toruble, there are some sites that i can go to and others I can't. I can't go to Trade Me, still can't access My Gmail, and I have tried to go to the Maxnet website and it still stops at half way and sits there.

are there any programs that i can try to find out what is wrong, (e.g. any clean up programs etc.)
Thanks
Aaron

679192 2008-07-03 04:34:00 Honestly, you guys and gals are spoilt rotten. Many people in New Zealand - including members here - can still only access dialup. Occasionally I have to use dialup with a max connection speed of 40kbs and often 34kbs. The lines are old in the area.

Before NZ rushes into ADSL2 etc we need to provide broadband across the nation at a reasonable cost - to everyone. Ok, I'll limit that to 95% because there are folks on islands and remote locations who are going to have to accept satellite or unreliable wireless.

If broadband is really a primary infrastructure requirement then lets provide it to everyone.

Telecom are working on getting 85% connection but it costs money. Anyone had a look at Telecom's share price lately?? It's a dog and has been for about 4 years now. And notice that Telstra, Vodaphone, Orcon etc etc aren't rushing out into cities or the countryside with fibreoptics. Telstra did Wellington and Christchurch - and then stopped. Why?
