en.wikipedia.org 128k limit is everything to do with Telecom. Fullspeed upload for a DSL line is generally around 700-800kbits/sec.

Telecom control the ADSL broadband speeds.
It is their network it runs through, who else would be able to.
That is why all ISPs have the same speed plans as that is what Telecom sells.

No one here is suggesting Telecom are capable of providing faster uploads than the technology allows, and you are correct 700-800 ADSL1 depending on drop off and a tad faster on DSL2 also depending on drop off.

Telecom are deliberate restricting uploads to to a puney 128k to protect there Standard Voice service from VOIP. They offer faster uploads at extra cost which is milking it, FS/512 can be provided at the same cost as FS/128.

Most countries with ADSL are not restricted to 128K on standard plans.

Don't get the issue confused.

Don't get the issue confused . I already know this - I was replying to Terry Porrit, who stated that our slow upload speeds were nothing to do with Telecom . This is incorrect - Telecom are the party responsible for the 128k upload caps .

What issue are you suggesting I am confused about?

Apologies I misread your post, we are agreeing.

679182 2008-06-19 00:48:00 The original question included: "Why is the upload speed so much slower than the download speed ?"

That is what I was responding to, and Telecom has nothing to do with why DSL is Asymmetric. Limiting to 128kbps with certain plans is another separate question.
When I signed up with Orcon I could have gone FS/FS, but opted for FS/128kbs, it's what you pay for, surely ?

679183 2008-06-19 01:03:00 Aaah, gotcha - I thought you were talking about the 128k limit, as that was the main subject of the original post. It would seem we agree :).

Certainly the reasons *why* Telecom imposes such a low upload limit (unless you pay them stacks) makes for an interesting discussion.
