679164 2008-06-17 15:56:00 Why is our maximum speed for ADSL only capable of 768kbps while download speed can exceed that and at the most 7mbps? Ninjabear (2948)
679165 2008-06-17 19:30:00 ADSL divides the channel in to fixed uplink and downlink proportions, with the uplink proportion being much smaller. The theoretical maximum for normal ADSL is 1Mbps but combined with interference in the network equipment itself, poorly maintained cabling and long distances to exchanges this can drop fast.

Thanks a good technical explanation.

But then how can they do FS/FS if you are prepared to pay for it ?

679166 2008-06-18 02:05:00 My ideal minimum specs moderate use internet would be 2mbit/512kbit with 10gb a month

I would be perfectly happy with that

Because if you listen to him, that IS fs. Full speed doesn't mean fast, it just means the fastest possible. Whatever that may be.

[Edit] Just re-read what you say. Ruh-roh. I don't know, good question. Maybe they have deals with cable? You'd be insane to go through them for full speed though. Telstra/Xnet are way better. If you can get them.

679168 2008-06-18 05:36:00 It's Southern Cross holding everyone to ransom. :( Not really anything to do with Telecom.

Pay more for a faster upload.

It would be nice if we had the option for 2mb up/down type connections, rather than full down/128k up.

Then national should be full up and international only 128k up

679170 2008-06-18 08:11:00 in an real network with only HTTP traffic you will see 10%/90% for upload/download traffic.

the problems come about when you do more then just http.

That's it. I'm changing my health insurance provider in protest at my slow broadband.

lol ummm utter garbage, by the way SC is 40% owned by Telecom lol

I have never seen Southern cross blamed for slow upload plans.

Telecom like to restrict upload speeds to hinder the progression of Voice over IP. This protects there phone services, toll calls etc, This includes the onsold UBS services that other providers purchase. Telecom like to charge more for faster upload even though it doesn't cost them any more in reality (you have a data cap anyway lol).

TelstraClear who provide residential Fibre/Cable to Wellington and CHCH use the SAME Southern Cross cable (there own purchased capacity), but have competitive plans vs DSL with 1MB and 2Mb uploads. Reason.... Its not on sold Telecom DSL rubbish.

679173 2008-06-18 22:12:00 Indeed..... just switched to TelstraClear cable and couldn't be happier - 4m/sec down and 2m/sec up . Might consider upgrading to 10m/sec down if the current cap isn't enough (all plans with a cap over 10G have a 10m/sec downstream speed). Erayd (23)
