809681 2009-09-13 05:39:00 OK - in this case, it should be reasonably easy, as the guided partitioner should cope with that layout. Click the button for 'guided', and you should see an option to resize hda2 and use the free space. Do you see this option?

Which version of Ubuntu are you trying to install - 9.04?

809682 2009-09-13 05:39:00 OK - I am gonna look for it.

Will that somehow limit any future updates and Hotfixes for XP if the area for it is shrunk?

809683 2009-09-13 05:41:00 Will that somehow limit any future updates and Hotfixes for XP if the area for it is shrunk? No - XP should not be affected in any way, other than simply having a smaller disk partition to play with.

I assume you backed up first though?

809684 2009-09-13 05:44:00 The options I get for the partitions are:

Guided - resize IDE1 Master, partition #2 (hda2) and use freed space

A slide bar is here with it set at 66%/45.4GB)
Guided - Use Entire Disk

(some grayed-out text under here)
Guided - Use largest continuous free space

Manual

809685 2009-09-13 05:46:00 Choose the first option (Guided - resize IDE1 Master, partition #2 (hda2) and use freed space). Move the slider to allocate the desired amount of space for Ubuntu, then click the 'next' button. Erayd (23)

I'm not too worried about a back up on this unit. It will be a total Ubuntu unit after I get it up and running.

I have 6 more XP-Pro licenses and I can use them if this fails - but with help I don't see how that can happen - - - this time!

809688 2009-09-13 05:50:00 Choose the first option (Guided - resize IDE1 Master, partition #2 (hda2) and use freed space) . Move the slider to allocate the desired amount of space for Ubuntu, then click the 'next' button .

I'll wait for input, but I slid the thing to 36%/24 . 7GB as I saw that it insisted upon 10GB for the Ubuntu install .

The NEXT button is waiting for permission to use .

809689 2009-09-13 05:52:00 That should be fine - go ahead and click the next button :D. Erayd (23)
809690 2009-09-13 05:56:00 Besides warning me that this could take a "long time" it says that

"any previous changes made have to be written to the disk"

YOU CANNOT UNDO THIS OPERATION

Sounds kinda scary .

What "changes" did I make or does it mean the orders for a new partition is what it's talkin' about here?
