You can get 150W equivalent and higher. The local Mitre10 is having a clearance. The bulbs are the straight loop type and are fairly sizable.

Those aren't covered by the ban as they'd fall into the category of "specialist" bulbs.

679634 2008-09-10 08:40:00 Does anyone know where to buy the LED lightbulbs (ones that will fit in a standard bayonet or screw fitting?)
They are available overseas but I haven't found them for sale here in those fittings apart from some novelty lights on Trademe. When the Labour/Greens' ban comes in, LEDs will probably become available as demand for them will increase. LED lightbulbs are still expensive but once installed you can forget about them for over a decade.

Are halogens covered by this ban?
Yes, the ban will set a required level of energy efficiency which has been set high enough to try and enforce the use of CFLs.

According to Lighting Direct in the metropolis of Sideshow Bob, this is incorrect. They say there is a fairly narrow list of bulbs that will be affected by the ban, and halogens are not one of them. I am only reporting what they told me in response to a direct question on this topic. Likewise specialist bulbs such as oven and fridge lights will not be affected - only incandescent lamps for which there is a more energy efficient alternative.

679636 2008-09-10 11:21:00 John H: he is wrong; halogens are also subject to the "Minimum Energy Performance Standards" (MEP). Not all halogen units will fail the MEP, but you can be sure the MEP was designed a preference for the use of CFLs over halogens in mind.
