And if an 80 year old falls, it's nasty - fractures, disability, having to move into battery care, hypothermia if not found, and not unusually, death from hypothermia or the trauma of the injury and surgery combined. It really is an issue that needs more careful consideration before legislation is shoved through. |

I use 26W (125w equivalent) CFLs which are nice and bright, and in my opinion closer to 100w incandescents. I use 20W CFLs (manufacturers claim they're equivalent to 100W incandescents) for desk lamps to get the level of light which is comfortable to read in. The colour temperature of the CFLs also makes a big difference - buying slightly more expensive brands with "Warm White" rather than "Daylight" colour temperatures is well worth it. We all know not to trust manufacturer's claims when it comes to things like laptop battery life, and so on; this is no different. |

| 679617 | 2008-09-09 04:13:00 | And the warmup, Somebody? Old person tottering as fast as possible to toilet freezing in middle of night and turns the light on - what? Wait two minutes and proceed? It's another example of ideological certainty gone mad - if they won't do the right thing as we define it, let's just force them. |

I meant CFL's for the lounge (where they're kept on), and maybe incandescent for the hallway, bathroom, etc. Failing that, maybe a bunch of halogens, or stockpile now. |

You're absolutely right, and I certainly wouldn't advocate for a ban on incandescent bulbs (or other alternatives). The report on the news last night was moaning about how CFLs are too dim to read with, arguing that it was an inherent issue with the technology and how it causes people's eyesight to deteriorate. I've obviously taken your comment out of context a bit when replying to this thread. |

I've used some for several years, but prefer the incandescent bulbs where good lighting is crucial. The claims that some are the equal of, say 75watt, are overrated. I think that some people's eyesight will suffer, unless particular attention is given to making absolutely certain there is adequate lighting. I gave up trying to read at night when I was staying at a home that had very high ceilings. What riles me is having no choice. |
