680214 2008-06-19 04:59:00 Hi guys

I'm trying to copy these files for a guy who's PC illiterate but I can get it downloaded or saved so that I can copy it to a DVD. Any suggestions

Thanks

680215 2008-06-19 23:22:00 Any of the elderly genntlemen on this forum downloaded this to a DVD perhaps - perhaps someone who has seen service in the NZ Armed Forces? Please?

680216 2008-06-20 01:06:00 I'm working on it. The quality won't be great, any you may need to download some things, but it might work (I'm busy getting all the required URL's). ubergeek85 (131)
680217 2008-06-20 01:16:00 Sorry. Was working on it, but for some reason, it won't give me the files. If it helps, the URLs that I was after are:
images.tvnz.co.nz
images.tvnz.co.nz
images.tvnz.co.nz

They should be there. Don't know why they aren't. If you do get them, convert them to MPEG2, join them up, and burn.

680218 2008-06-20 02:18:00 Thanks Geekster. I tried last night everywhere to get the URL's to d/l but I could not find them. Will try tonite.

680219 2008-06-20 02:34:00 Aha,
I have a friend who made a program for this sort of thing. It will download anything AND join them properly without sync problems or such into 1 file too.

680220 2008-06-20 04:05:00 pctek - is the program available ?

680221 2008-06-25 02:27:00 At last somebody from TVNZ answered my email - albeit only to say she's the wrong person to talk to. It was forwarded to the right person (?) and I may get more info soon. I will post the info once I have it so the old timers here can take note too.

680222 2008-06-25 13:41:00 On TVNZ's site, you have the choice of Windows Media Video (ASX/WMV) or Flash Video (FLV). Often the WMV source is the default used by the TV stations, so is created at a higher resolution and bitrate. In this case you have no real choice as the flash content appears to be missing or offline.

The working WMV files are on their MMS server:
mms://media.tvnz.co.nz/tvnz_7/live_tribute08_part1_128k.wmv (52:35 min = 70.12 MB)
mms://media.tvnz.co.nz/tvnz_7/live_tribute08_part2_128k.wmv (53:53 min = 71.92 MB)
mms://media.tvnz.co.nz/tvnz_7/live_tribute08_part3_128k.wmv (46:03 min = 61.46 MB)

As this is streaming media, you need to "capture" the stream in order to save to the hard drive. I used the trial version of "Stream Down". http://stream-down.cocsoft.com

Once you've downloaded the three parts, you'll need to join and convert to MPEG-2 compliant files suitable for DVD creation. You should create a 1/4 D1 DVD spec (352x288) to fit all three clips on the one disc, rather than full D1 (720x576), as the source files are only 320x240 in size. There are heaps of programs out there that will do this with varying degrees of success.

Here's a few:

Avidemux http://www.avidemux.org (free)
- powerful program, allows file joining
- can have problems with incomplete files or joining VBR FLV files (audio sync)
- didn't like the first (unjoined) TVNZ WMV clip.

Allok Video Joiner www.alloksoft.com (US$29)
- very easy to join and convert media formats
- often works more better than the pro tools - particularly on incomplete files
- Full version works great (manually set to 352x288)
- Trial ver only converts 50% of each source file

TMPGEnc Version 2.5 http://www.tmpgenc.net (free)
- MPEG-2 encoding is limited to 30 days

TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com (US$90 or 14 day trial)
- terrific commerical DVD software
- easy menu creation with customisation
- trial version has watermarks on the menu

Regarding Flash video, I've written a simple FLV joiner, but haven't publically released it yet. My program eliminates the need to convert or re-process the files. So there's no quality loss, and VBR files remain in sync. Obviously this is only useful if you intend to keep the FLV file format for PC playback.

I've also written a small patch for the Flash browser plugin, that allows you to easily copy downloaded FLV files from the Windows Temp path that are normally auto deleted and copy protected.

If there's any demand for either of these, I'll have to find a decent file server first.

680223 2008-06-25 20:40:00 Thanks Andy1. Will give it a go tonight.

Somebody please help this man with a bit of file server space
