With a Hail Mary pass on the field, the Associated Press (AP) has launched a very stupid and counterproductive (and alienating) attack on bloggers, referrers and others who might like to link a story that they find and want to honestly disseminate to friends and associates .

Here's a blurb:

"AP seems to be aware of the minefield it's choosing to walk through . "We are not trying to sue bloggers," Kennedy said . "That would be the rough equivalent of suing grandma and the kids for stealing music," and who would be stupid enough to try that?"

"We don't want to cast a pall over the blogosphere by being heavy-handed, so we have to figure out a better and more positive way to do this," said Jim Kennedy, vice president and strategy director . " ( . nytimes . com/2008/06/16/business/media/16ap . html" target="_blank">www . nytimes . com)

Michael Arrington explained the TechCrunch take ( . techcrunch . com/2008/06/16/heres-our-new-policy-on-ap-stories-theyre-banned/" target="_blank">www . techcrunch . com):

"Here's our new policy on AP stories: they don't exist . We don't see them, we don't quote them, we don't link to them . They're banned until they abandon this new strategy, and I encourage others to do the same until they back down from these ridiculous attempts to stop the spread of information around the Internet . "

This, of course, will have about the same impact as those periodic calls for a gas boycott, but still, it's a message AP really needs to get its head around as it works on the next write-through . "

Seems to me that ANY clickovers and referrals to a story would be something A/P WANTS . . . right!?!?

Aren't they in the business of presenting of a good profile and spreading their writers to a very broad and diffuse readership?

Reposting full text of copyright material is a Bad Thing .

Posting a link to copyright material and enough of an excerpt to encourage a click-through is a Good Thing .

It drives traffic, raises visibility and weaves the source material into an ongoing conversation .

Getting linked is what you want to happen to your content .
