809915 2009-09-13 22:29:00 I HATE MICROSOFT AUTOMATIC UPDATES!!!::mad::badpc::mad::badpc::mad:
Sorry for the use of caps I am just really annoyed right now, just had windows say that there were some updates that were required to be installed, so I did it with out thinking. And now my laptop will not load to the desktop and it has so far restarted itself about 3 times. Had heaps of errors come up about .dlls in the system32 folder. Have so far been waiting 3 minutes to get to login screen.

809916 2009-09-13 22:39:00 I doubt it. Check your laptop for malware etc.

809917 2009-09-13 22:42:00 What on earth did you have running on your laptop? Could we assume that there is some software with licences of "questionable" status running on it?

I have run many different versions of Windows over the years, and have _never_ had any problems related to automatic updates.

809918 2009-09-13 22:43:00 ok now just waiting for vista to roll back updates that failed nedkelly (9059)
809919 2009-09-13 22:45:00 I use to have Nod32 3.0 that a mate installed which I thought was a dodgy copy so when he came back from Aus he said yeah it was so now my antivirus is trial of nod32 4.0 until I get some money to get a full license.
The last thing I did on the laptop before it started to play up was install a batch of updates and then click restart

809920 2009-09-13 22:49:00 Yay finally got to desktop after update roll back. And I had an error message come up saying something about "Remove the W32/Gaobot.worm.gen.u - Win32/RBot.3eu!Worm Virus from your computer". How could I have gotten this with up to date antivirus? nedkelly (9059)
809921 2009-09-14 00:14:00 Well in addition to your antivirus you should also have at least 2 stand alone antispyware programs. NOD is excellent but you still need AS as well.

So your problem probably wans't the updates.
However, yes they can break your PC. There was the rather notorious one that trashed AMD PCs a while ago.

And I had one recently that stuffed attachments in WIndows Mail. Removing the offending update cured it.

If you prefer to download selected updates - turn off the Auto and manually download them, or set it to Notify.

809923 2009-09-14 05:12:00 Get Comodo internet security if you don't want to pay for antivirus Agent_24 (57)
809924 2009-09-14 09:35:00 Get Avast A/V + Comodo Firewall and 2 other spyware/malware products as pctek said.

Easy to blame MS ain't it?
