809516 2009-09-12 22:52:00 Hey on my server that I just setup yesterday I set a static ip address and also deleted the default gateway address so the pc cant access the net but i was wondering does this stop people being able access it from the internet side? And if so does this mean no virus should infect it? nedkelly (9059)
809517 2009-09-12 23:07:00 hmm... technically yes you are right. because the server is unable to find a gateway to the Internet then you should be safe from threats originating from the Internet.

That doesn't mean other machines on your network will block things to the server though... if they can "see" the server then there is a chance that Internet nasties can be passed on to the server because the other hosts on your network will consider it safe and trusted node on the network.

I would just install decent AV/ firewall on the server... regardless of whether it access the Internet or not.

809518 2009-09-12 23:12:00 Is there a decent firewall that will run on Windows Server 2003? Will comodo do? Well actually when I go to Entire Network and then to my work group the server does not show up the only way to access it is through its ip address nedkelly (9059)
809519 2009-09-12 23:32:00 Cant see why not. According to the comodo forum, it should work on server 2003 Speedy Gonzales (78)
809520 2009-09-13 00:04:00 hey just wondering my mate wants to be able to get stuff off my server. What would be the best way for him to do that? nedkelly (9059)
809521 2009-09-13 01:17:00 I am wondering is there any way to allow access to my server over the internet?
So what I would like to be able to do is enter in a UNC path on the client pc in another location and then I can login and access data on the server's hard drives.
Is this possible?
