| 682054 | 2008-06-24 21:04:00 | www.radionz.co.nz I wonder if I can reclaim a potato farm in Ireland or a castle in Scotland? How long is this going to go on? While I know there were problems during colonisation, all people alive today were not born then! |

| 682056 | 2008-06-24 23:25:00 | The problem is though, that the British didn't simply take it. If they did we probably wouldn't have any issues. Instead, they made some pretence at legally buying it. Shot themselves in the foot right there. And then they had the cheek to deliberately mistranslate it. Except you're right. Nobody who signed is alive anymore, so It's a bit silly really. What we should do is ceremonially give them the country, then tell them we'll just do everything else, ok? Give them a certificate. And then ignore it entirely. My GF's family used to own a chateau in france before the war. Maybe I should push to see if we can get it back for her??? :D |

| 682058 | 2008-06-24 23:54:00 | I'd be the first to call myself liberal, but that's freaking ridiculous. Someone sit them down and welcome them to NZ. Do they realise they even live here? I'd love to be able to dictate what happens in my airspace. I think we all should. Then planes can sort out rent to each property they fly over for the priviledge. F*&%ing insane |

| 682059 | 2008-06-25 00:14:00 | I have been on that marae, some years ago now, and it was a major issue then. The marae was there first, and then they plonked the airfield down next door to them. It has got bigger and bigger, and more and more noisy. I was just there working on a consultation process, and we were inside, but the noise of planes landing and taking off was insane. I could see what it would have been like if it was a tangi and they were trying to welcome people onto the marae. Just imagine if you were having a funeral for your granny, and that carry on was happening just above your heads. And just imagine how you would feel if someone plonked an airfield down right beside your house. You would be the first ones down at the Environment Court. If I remember correctly, the iwi tried to stop the airfield being built, but in those days no-one took any notice of them. Christchurch Airport has some draconian rules to stop people building near the airport, which is stopping Kaiapoi developing. The airport was there first. However, in the Rotorua case, the marae was there first, on ancestral land, but the iwi were treated like they were dirt. OK, claiming the airspace may sound silly, but there is another side to this story. |

I fail to see why NZers of today should pay for the mistakes(?) of others. The money paid over the years amount to billions. I don't think anyone would dispute that. Why is it, then, that there are so many (so called) indigenous people, children in particular, that are still living in poor conditions? Why has not at least some of that money gone to improving their lot? Where has that money gone? What are all those billions being used for? To improve their lives? Some, perhaps, but certainly not the ones who really need it. Someone is sitting on piles! |

OK, claiming the airspace may sound silly, but there is another side to this story. How many times are we going to bring up the past? OK. I take it that no Maori people actually use planes to go anywhere. So the marae was there first before the airport in Rotorua probably. But to claim the airspace? No different to Maori claiming TV channels and etc. Please be aware that when the colony was started there was no such thing as TV, Planes, Cars, TAB, Beer and etc. I know a few Maori people and work with them on a regular basis. Once upon a time I used to play golf at Te Puke. The Te Puke golf course moved for reasons I know about. Where the course used to be is covered in scrub and gorse. As I said in my first post I do believe that there has been some injustice in the past but how long are settlements going to take and when will it stop? |
