680303 2008-07-03 07:16:00 Hey there,

Im an Xnet customer. Iv recently changed from one of the old flatrate standard plans to the torrent plan. I have found that theres been a significant drop in DL speeds at night since i changed. I used to DL 3-5GB per night, where as now its more like 1-2GB (over 8 hours).

So i guess that makes my speed about 50kbps on avg during torrent hours (12am to 8am). I assume my reduced speeds are due to me being chucked in a separate pool. Personally i think its still worth it though. I used to just leave my comp on to DL once every few days so it wasn't too expensive, but now i just leave it on every night as its not going to cost anymore anyway.

If you do chose to go with a torrent plan, let me know if you experience similar results. I would be interested to hear from anyone else on this plan also.

Cheers, Ryan

680304 2008-07-03 08:17:00 Yep...I've been using the torrent plan for a few weeks. It's good not to have to get paranoid about spiraling download cost.

The downside of this 12 midnight to 8am plan is having to stay up to turn on my d/l prog (eMule). To turn it off in the morning at 7.55am I use a small app called PC Auto Shutdown (www.drivermagician.com)

Haven't figured out a way to start it automatically yet :)

680305 2008-07-03 22:11:00 I upgraded to the torrent plan a month ago and, yeah, the download speed does drop a bit but not enough to be annoying. The upload speed is still good. Thanks to this plan I've increased my speed to full speed both ways and increased my data cap but am still paying less than I use to.

By the way braindead, why don't you use windows task scheduler to start emule.

Use Scheduled Tasks (or Task Scheduler as it's called in Vista) to set a time when the program will automagically start, and optionally, stop .

uTorrent has a schedule manager for running downloads ONLY during those times. Most download apps should have them as well. I know FDM does but it appears a bit buggy at times. IDM is much better but has a fee now :(

680308 2008-07-07 06:55:00 I use uTorrent too. The scheduler is great, can just set what hours you want it to download. Also with uTorrent you only need to upload 6kbps to have the download speed unlimited by the app.

I havent really tried any of the other latest gen dl apps, but i havent really found any shortcommings of uTorrent, so im happy.

I think get an old pc and just leave on full time and put it in the attic. Then i can just remote desktop to it any set up DL's. The fans in my comp make sleep hard at night. And the old pc in the attic can act as my homebrew heater at the same time : )

680309 2008-07-07 07:16:00 Cool...thanks for the scheduler advice. For some reason my XP task scheduler crashes so I'm using a third-party one. braindead (1685)
680310 2008-09-04 10:43:00 Hey guys,

Iv noticed that over the past month or my speed under this plan has dropped drastically. I was getting about 1gb per night before, which was average at best. Now my i often only get 200-300mb per night. Has anyone else experienced this?

Cheers

680311 2008-09-23 13:35:00 Yes I have. After midnight you are virtually reduced to dialup speeds.

This plan is ideal for those people who simply want to download torrents overnight and watch them another time but useless for other users.
The speed seems to pick up at about 6.00am, a month ago it was 4.00am.
I think I'll switch back to Xtra.
