681515 2008-06-24 01:13:00 "I don't have any beliefs or allegiances. I don't believe in this country, I don't believe in religion, or a god, and I don't believe in all these man-made institutional ideas."

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

A little "conflicted" were we?

Even hedonistic bullies foul up. Oops.....make him: a room temperatured-DEAD propositional epistemological justificationalist.

681516 2008-06-24 01:32:00 Perhaps he just figured praying to something he doesn't personally believe in is a better option then sitting in front of the idiot box?

I think he was an excellent social commentator, and he had great faith in his own views, A wise man well worth listening to, even if he was just as wrong as everybody is capable of.

This for example is a load of rubbish

"The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgement, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

When did he get the info on the shortness of peoples tempers through time? what a stupid statement to make, Narrower viewpoints?, again, what rubbish.Spend more but have less? aye? you what now? more degrees but less sense?, pffft More medicines but less wellness?, Right old chap, You would have died 20 years ago if that was the case, Medical know-how and modern technology kept his sorry arse alive.

681517 2008-06-24 01:35:00 When was that written though? It's not entirely the case now, but it certainly has been in his lifetime.

Especially in the states, think McCarthy.

681518 2008-06-24 05:27:00 He was only 12 years older than me, really we were the first generation to fully grow up in modern times, he said that in 1997 after his first wife died. zqwerty (97)
681519 2008-06-24 08:36:00 I find it difficult to envision how any generation can avoid growing up in modern times. ;)

Even with dual iPods, it is hard to do anything else.
(I am exempt, since I refuse to have any iPods, and to grow up.)

681520 2008-06-24 11:35:00 Before the second world war people grew up with a sense of themselves in relationship to the generations that came before and how they fitted into history, then affluence became commonplace and corporations targeted particular generations and marketed products exclusively for a particular generation and which previous generations could not really relate to, look at what is happening today and for the last few generations.

I say it first really got started with the baby boomers and has got worse since and that is what I define as modernity, a generation that sees itself as separate from the ones that came before and does not find much relevance in what was before.

Hence the easy/effortless iconoclasm of Carlin and others.

681521 2008-06-24 11:42:00 Funny, I thought they grew up ignorant of the world more then walking distance from their birth place, Hence they were easily brainwashed with religious propaganda. You don't need to go back very far to find people that were never taught to read or write and had no concept of the generations that came before them never mind a relationship to them.

Education has replaced the fear of god.
