I disagree - I think he was right to say 3G would be a killer app for most of the world's markets. Apple's decision to dump the exclusive/revenue share model is evidence of that. They've signed up far more telcos to a straightforward model (including VodNZ) that doesn't include revenue sharing. O2 was in the position of needing to stand out from a crowded market with a unique offer. The iPhone fitted that bill nicely, and O2 was happy to pay the price. Most telcos aren't in that market and aren't in that position. 3G is one third of the killer app - the other 2 thirds are the software apps/features that can make use of 3G and generate addtional revenue plus the greatly improved data usage rates as people are finally able to make use of the web on their mobiles at a reasonable rate. I think Apple's decision came about because they had based their initial plans on the US market and AT&T which is/was a ways behind the European market when it comes to 3G services and plans etc. Of course they found all this out when they started dealing with European mobile phone operators and seeing who the iPhone sold in the various countries and and what price points compared to the US. This bought them to the US $199.00 universal price point for the iPhone(with contract). It will be interesting to see how things take off when people are able to start buying apps online from the store as well as browse the web etc. And another thread successfully diverted to the iPhone. And probably not the last either beeswax, considering it relates to mobile data usage and price plans. |
