681080 2008-06-22 09:41:00 Well my mums partner has sent me on the mission to find a printer from $200-$300 that can, obviously, print, print photos, he will use the printer for printing quotes etc for his business

now i came on to google!...it denied me, atm i have a fossil laserjet, so after not looking at printers for years to looknig for a good one, im quite lost now lol

itd be good if the printer could make good quality prints of my designs so i can proof my designs for colour etc as well

So anyone got any suggestions?

any input would be useful!

thanks! :D

681081 2008-06-22 09:44:00 Canon, Canon or Canon.

IMO.

You should be able to pick up a nice 5xx or 6xx series for under $300, they are a very very nice printer.

681084 2008-06-22 11:43:00 Canon is a good one for say glossy papers. Epson are good as well for say fine art, matte papers etc. Epson has more paper selection in that area. Their glossy papers are getting pretty good these days thou. Pro's tend to use more Epson's and for those they tend to use more the matte and fine art papers.

If you only gonna spend that much money, maybe its a close tie with Canon and Epson. Those prices maybe won't get you into a premium glossy or a premium fine art paper printer. They are probably optimised for say glossy papers and inkjet papers and things like that and what they call presentation papers and semi gloss.

If you are lucky you can get a good deal 2nd hand if you want. Epson R800 and the Canon i9000 or i9900 are pretty good as well as the Epson 2100, there is also a Epson A3 printer for about $500 new or such.

681085 2008-06-22 11:50:00 If you are printing small pix its prob not worth it .. cos places do 20 or 25c a 6x4. Self print is no way to do that.

I say print at least A4 to print yourself.

I was in say Harvey Norman and they were selling Epson Glossy Papers - not the premium stuff, maybe 25 sheets of 6x4 and they were costing like $30 for a packet. That is over $1.00 for one 6x4 paper not incl the ink. :(

For printing quotes and other formal work - I found tha the b/w laser are great - the toner gets more pages/cartridge and over time is cheaper and it looks more professional. We had a HP 6L laser and that was old and maybe not handling the big files these days v well like PDF documents, so we got a Canon multipurpose laser scanner so the parents can use the photocopy function without the computer. I also have a 2nd hand Epson 2100 printer (A3) which I got for $300 with incl free delivery from Auckland and $200 of inks and about $200 for a RIP utility that I don't use. We basically use the HP for simple stuff cos I just wanna run the ink off since we got 3rd party ink and the side is leaking, we mostly use the Canon laser and only for my pictures A4 and A3 we use the Epson inkjet. Occasionally if we need color for someone's school project we print it for that but v seldom.

681086 2008-06-22 20:52:00 Canon is my preference (having been sucked into buying an HP multi-function piece of cr*p - nice print output, but horrible, slow, confusing software).

Whatever brand you go for, go with individual ink tanks.

And look for one that doesn't try to install 300mb of 'utilities' on your HDD!!! (In other words, stay away from HP!!)

681089 2008-06-23 07:13:00 Not sure about glossy paper via a laser printer (like a color one) but lasers incl color are not noticed for its photographic quality. They may be sufficient for work purposes thou. Nomad (952)
