A few questions if I may.

Which is quicker...moving files from a Nas, using 10/100 LAN, to my computer.
Or moving files from one hard drive on my computer to another hard drive on my computer?

If I have set up my twin hard drive Nas to Raid 1.
So does that mean that if I remove one of the hard drives from the Nas and then connect it to my main computers motherboard ,I have spare SATA connectors, I will then be able to see and access all the files on that hard drive.

Thats it for now .
Thanks
Richard

811423 2009-09-17 22:25:00 The second option, defintely!

And yes, you should be able to access the files, but you may have to rebuilt the RAID1 array...

Moving files from drive to drive internally ought to be much faster...

Thanks for confirming what I thought.
Since my motherboard can support up to 4 SATA drives the only benefits of not storing my backups on board, rather than the much slower NAS ,would be the physical separation that the NAS provides...true.

I don't think my files are that important that I will put up with a NAS that is so slow and drops it's connection to my LAN every day or so.

Should have read more and got some opinions before spending money on my NAS.
Thanks
Richard

NAS can be nice to have if you have a home network with more computers and want to share files without having all the computers running at the same time , or if you get a "media extender" for your TV and the NAS is UPNP compatible or even DLNA compatible.
But if you want to run NAS then do go for the 1000MB/s rather than the 10/100 .
(You can also get routers with USB drive attachment and media streaming capability built in !)

Alas NAS is still rather expensive at the moment but prices seems to be dropping but far to slowly.....

811427 2009-09-18 02:56:00 The cheap NAS devices are sloooooowwwwww
My one was about USB1 speed, so slow I just gave it aaway.

PC's coverted to NAS will be alot faster (freeNAS etc)

Theres a reason a good NAS can cost $1000

811428 2009-09-18 03:30:00 The processor is a real limiting function in terms of speed...most NAS's only have a slow 400 mhz processor....or less! Blam (54)
