810413 2009-09-15 05:30:00 Hi there,

I am allowed to download Windows 7 Professional for free since Auckland University is part of the Academic Alliance Program .

. msdnaa . net/search/SchoolSearchIntl . aspx" target="_blank">www . msdnaa . net

They are only providing the x64 bit version of Windows 7 Professional at the moment and I am wondering whether it should be alright on my laptop .

I am currently using Windows 7 Release Candidate x32 bit version .

HP Pavilion dv5-1209ax
2 . 1 AMD Athlon x2 Duo Core Processor
4GB Ram
ATI HD 3650 Graphics
Windows 7 RC x32 Operating System .

HP aren't proving Windows 7 x64 Drivers for my laptop at the moment but will the x64 Vista drivers still work?

Since I am using x32 Vista Drivers for Windows 7 RC x32 bit, should it be the same for Windows 7 Professional x64 version with Vista x64 Drivers .

The link for the drivers are here:

Also what is the difference between the x32 and x64 operating system? Which one is better?

Cheers :)

810414 2009-09-15 05:32:00 Vista 64-bit drivers will work fine in Win7 64-bit 95%+ of components
A 64-bit OS can address more than 4GB of total memory space.
I see no reason to stay with a 32-bit OS, provided your hardware is 64-bit capable which, based on HPs website, yours is.

810415 2009-09-15 05:34:00 Well, in most cases you will be alright with the drivers supplied by the O/S, if not, then by all means try Vista x64 drivers from the HP site. The only thing I can see getting in the way is that x64 uses signed drivers, and i dont think you can change this, but I might be a bit foggy on that. SolMiester (139)

Actually, a 32-bit OS can't even address 4GB, in most cases only about 3GB or sometimes a little more. Windows will however, since Vista SP1, show the actual amount of RAM (in this case 4GB) in System Properties, regardless of whether it is actually able to use it all.

Wrong. Actually 32bit Windows address addresses up to 4gb of memory in total including video memory and others...

And you shouldn't say 32bit OS as its actually only Windows 32bit(Google PAE;)

810419 2009-09-15 09:39:00 It should be fine, i upgraded from Vista to W7 and all my old programs in the programs files folder got removed to the program files (x86) folder. The program files (x86) is for 32bit programs and the other program files is for native 64 bits applications. i think. whellington (15030)

So the x86 version is the same as the x32 bit version .

Didn't know that .

Thanks very much!!

Are you doing a Computer Science degree at UOA?
Also, can the Uni provide a copy for me or do I have to download it from home . My broadband at home isn't very fast and I'm limited to usage .

mmmm not sure about that. Got Vista 32bit with SP2, under properties it sees 4GB of RAM but under task manager > performance its only using 3GB

810422 2009-09-15 11:35:00 I also have 4 GB of RAM in my notebook running Windows 7 (32-bit) with about 3 GB mentioned under Task Manager > Performance. However I think this relates to 4-Gigabyte Tuning (msdn.microsoft.com(VS.85).aspx) which is mentioned in the MSDN article Memory Limits for Windows Releases (msdn.microsoft.com(VS.85,loband).aspx). sal (67)
