Dell is attempting to make a comeback and seems to be doing ok on the server front although their margins have been pretty low over the last few quarters despite a large amount of revenue being generated. |

Near enough as dam it. |

| 682642 | 2008-06-28 09:21:00 | Before I knew what I was doing I bought a **** box only its not white, motherboard just died last week and guess what my P4 is sold onlt to that company for a particular mobo my P4 nothing wrong with it will not run on other boards so not only have I bought a new mobo and RAM now I'm buying a new CPU should have it Tuesday and be back on my own PC . So in my opinion if you sold mass white boxes warranty would be very hard to offer. (Mines way out of warranty) |

| 682644 | 2008-06-28 18:59:00 | First, I think you've gotta figger what and who your target is. I can spout a few 'ferinstances here..but they may not be logical where you live. Let me show you something....even though you generally eschew my opinions anyway. My area is rife with old people. They will ONLY buy brand names. Period. If you were here, you'd starve to death. The local merchants stock a few diodes, an occasional LED and maybe a USB2 port expansion card..but they ALL have Dells, HPs, COMPAQs, eMachines and some Chinese clones..etc. That there are a few modders and self-builders living here is true but they drive to Riverside (40 miles away) or Escondido (50 miles away) to get the custom stuff they need. It's either that or the catalogs. What I am saying is that you may have an untapped niche that you are missing. Seems to me that there are a lot of solitary individuals in NZ (read: Old Farts) ..fine and dandy...but they might just be the thing you are seeking. A little elder-type kindness. ...perhaps a starter class that you can charge them for and a pat on the back for graduation....who knows? If you can crack into that market because of the brand names, then I'd go for it. With your smarts, what would it take to get a certificate to repair, can you say: Dells? My brother-in-law got a Panasonic, Sony, Teac, Mitsubishi, and other certification by just providing a list of his test equipment and a few pixs of his shop. He wasn't out-in-the-sticks either...he is in downtown Canoga Park...a very metropolitan area of Los Angeles. I don't know fer sure, but it seems to me that NZ dealers are either like yourself (custom puterbuilders) or box stores that have shelves and shelves of "stuff" to capture the eye. I also am reading between the lines and think there may be a non typical seasonal slump in sales/service right now in the world...not just in your neighborhood. Winter there is Summer here and so on. Can't blame the seasons or the temps forever. In short times, money-wise, it's those who bend a little who smell better when the fan blade is finally clean. Add a little sugar (service, a class or so, readiness to make house calls by you or another tech that you charge for) and see what you think. Without selling your morals and ideals out, do you see any venue possibility in trying to investigate the possibility? BTW: I've still got some beige-box Dell Dimensions that run well having come out of a big company that wanted to upgrade to HP. The Dells are still running with XP-Pro, whilst the HPs are hitting the scrap heap all the time. I sell one to a friend occasionally.. ..and they keep on running like the Energizer bunny. |

| 682646 | 2008-06-28 23:52:00 | Joe - Over here at the bottom of the world, we have a really good non profit organisation called Seniornet. They do computer lessons for old farts taught by tech savy old farts & only charge enough to cover costs. Seniornet aren't much use to PCtek's clients since they probably wouldn't travel to invercargill just for computer lessons, but they are great for people already in Invercargill or one of the other towns where they have set up. I've had a few people who have got me to stay a bit longer after installing a new PC & teach them a few things about it, but getting a technician to teach you is too expensive for most people & not always the best value for money. Someone who specalises in teaching people how to use their computers could probably do a better job cheaper. |
