683311 2008-06-28 23:14:00 That says it all really - its called business, and as we all know business is not always fair./ honest.

This a comment was quoted from my post - You are right many dont - I know where Office came from, but can't see the point of dragging up what came from where. Every software manufacture gets different ideas/ processes from other places - why reinvent the wheel so to speak.

Doesn't matter what OS is used by whom, someone will be negative about it, every OS has its faults - just a fact of life.
As mentioned before it they were perfect there would be no need to have people fixing computers- we would be all out of jobs.

I might just add to my comment about MS Licensing Office until the "end of time" - that should be until more people and businesses start using what is on offer from Google, iWork08, OpenOffice and the various applications that are coming out on the iPhone. One thing that MS hasn't been able to successfully tap into because the competition is moving too fast is free, easy to use online office documents which many students and universities are gradually moving to. Also becasue the bulk of these applications DON'T carry the Microsoft Tax which will serve to help their adoption rate.

As to people fixing computers going out of business -considering the element of human error both in the manufacture and operation of various electronic devices - I don't see that happening on any device any time soon.

One other thing that Micrsoft has not only missed or not succeeded in and not been able to achieve any penetration on - quality online applications for fast selling hand held devices that are about to explode onto the market place and which will become the new web 2.0 platform.

683313 2008-06-28 23:25:00 Seems to me that from what I have read in this thread, Microsoft is a total and utter failure and other operating systems and software are the most successful.

To clarify Ken - when Microsoft is/was the bully boy dominant force with little or no competition to stop it - It can/did do what it likes.

BUT - Put it on a level playing field with a whole bunch of fast moving innovators from the likes of Google, Apple, Sun(Open Office), Linux and MS gets shown up for what they really are and really do - put out mediocre crap about 2-3 years after competition. Bill Gates has often said - it doesn't have to be great, it just has to be "good enough" for people to use. That presents a problem when you have tough competition in an open market.

You might also notice that MS's market share of "95%" of personal computers has dropped to around 90% in the last 2-3 years - because people now have a choice. Expect that declining market share to continue to be whittled away over the coming quarters, much like what Firefox is doing to IE - Killing it. :)

I bet that whole bunch of fast moving innovators from the likes of Google, Apple, Sun get real pissed off with M$ and how much money they make.

683316 2008-06-28 23:59:00 Not really since Sun gives OpenOffice away for free along with Java(I think?). Sun also liceneses its server technology and a lot of the stuff that Sun Microsystems do is open sourced. I doubt that Google would be worried since Microsoft/Ballmer is more worried about buying Yahoo to COMPETE with Google since Google IS killing Microsoft in the online search and ad revenue stakes and Apple, well they are in the process of releasing millions on iPhones on the public - something that Microsoft hasn't worked out an answer to.

Microsoft's revenue although huge has actually been fairly flat for the last 10 years or so where as both Google and Apple continue to grow strongly each quarter.

683317 2008-06-29 00:06:00 vitalstatistix - Microsoft doesn't always "put out mediocre crap about 2-3 years after competition" - sure they have put out some real crap, but they also have some good products & the intergration between their products is nice.

Microsoft got to where they are by a combination of dirty tactics, good timing & throwing truckloads of money at projects that were late to the party, but that doesn't mean everything they make is crap. Having said that, they no longer represent value for money in a lot of situations because free software has become just as good & it is a lot harder for them to pull off dirty tactics.

683318 2008-06-29 00:10:00 I agree Greven, they do have a few good qualities in some of their products such as MS Exchange which Apple has licensed the APIs from for the iPhone but over all it should never be said that what MS has put out can't be done better and cheaper by a competitor. vitalstatistix (9182)
683319 2008-06-29 00:16:00 Software history IS INTERESTING !

I saw I doco on tv about 10 years ago where they interviewed the two US teachers that invented Visicalc the first computer spreadsheet.

They did not patent it, Lotus 123 and the IBM PC came along and creamed them and made millions for Lotus.

The two teachers were still happily teaching ! (I would have been pissed off)

So I am patenting my plastic hardware product !

Bill put Visicalc onto the Apple and then ported it onto the PC and called it Excel - or he may have called it Excel when he put it on the Apple II en.wikipedia.org

You would be well advised to patent your plastic hardware product - just be prepared to spend up LARGE when you have to defend the patent in court.
