2008-06-26 08:35:00 | Should I sell ****boxes: Hp, Compaq, Dell etc, the sort of thing the toaster shops sell, or stick with custom builds? | pctek (84) | |
2008-06-26 08:37:00 | Oh yes, selling ****boxes will generate excellent return business for you. Don't think you could get the likes of Dell, but start selling Acer and you can expect your customers coming back to you every couple months or so :) | Deathwish (143) | |
2008-06-26 08:38:00 | One small question pctek... what are the 4 star boxes you are referring to? As to the brand name PC boxes sell them if a customer requests one but otherwise you are probably sticking to and servicing your own custom builds. Which would get you a better profit margin?

2008-06-26 08:40:00 | From a marketing point-of-view, I wouldn't - I think being a small, independently owned business selling custom PC's gives you clear differentiation from Hardly Normal etc And you'll end up with all the horrible warranty work for Acer etc :yuck:

2008-06-26 09:08:00 | You could do something similar to what we do - Insite custom builds computers for us with high quality (usually Asus) parts. We found that is more cost effective than building our own computers & it makes warranties a lot easier to deal with. The only problem with Insite is they have started pushing MSI notebooks :yuck:

2008-06-26 09:16:00 | one advantage of selling brand name is they generally its less hassle. same markup but less work. then you can get extra work fixing it when its cheap parts crap out. i had that recently, realtive wanted a new pc but didn't a custom built one so a quick phone call to wholesaler and one is sent up. job done, no mucking around sorcing parts, installin parts, installing software. but i still prfer custom built, i like my products to be good not something you have fix in 6 months time!

2008-06-26 09:20:00 | Should I sell ****boxes: Hp, Compaq, Dell etc, the sort of thing the toaster shops sell, or stick with custom builds? I only do custom builds, if the buyer wants a ****box then they can go to DSE.

2008-06-26 21:58:00 | Its kind of a rhetorical question. I'm having a fight with my best friend over it. I tell people its not the label on the outside - its whats on the inside. And thats the problem with ****boxes - it may have some good parts but usually they don't. She thinks I should - for the reasons Deathwish said. She thinks it would increase profits. I hate the whole idea. How would I be different from all the Noel Leemings etc then? In my experience people do buy them, then get upset when things fail and there's wait time while its fixed. They get REALLY upset. I tried to tell her, quantity over quality doesn't always work anyway - look at PC Company for instance. And the likes of Ascent and Computer Lounge do OK. And a lot of people care about customer service more. I would rather make it as they do, if I can't well, sad but I can't bring myself to compromise my standards. Shes basing her opinion on ONE PC a friend on on-sells ****boxes sold her workplace. Its been less than a year too.............

2008-06-26 22:02:00 | Insite custom builds computers for us with high quality (usually Asus) parts. it makes warranties a lot easier to deal with. I know about Insite - Clive Wilson do it too. I don't see that it does make the warranty easier - if I do have a part fail - then its t5he suppliers customer service that determines how easy or not it is. And I make sure mine have excellent customer service. Never had any hassles with RMAs. Sending something all the way back to Insite isn't any different that I can see - assuming their service is as good. And then you are limited to a certain configuration as well.

2008-06-26 22:05:00 | I wouldn't - and don't. Too much to go wrong, ends up with very unhappy customers when it dies 2 months out of warranty. :( We can get them in - and if the customer wants it - we can do a competitive price on a brand name box. But they know the risks involved too, and that we have very little control over warranty and sometimes replacement parts.
