1443893 2017-12-20 23:59:00 We have a concrete patio just outside the lounge door. Every so often, with the door open, we can hear a tap! tap! tap! We wondered what it was until one day we spotted a blackbird with a snail in his beak bashing it on the concrete then eating the snail. It's not just now and then but we hear them cracking open snail shells at least a couple of times a day. The patio is litered with empty snail shells. We haven't spotted a thrush doing that but we suppose they do as well. Does anyone else see or hear birds cracking open snail shells? Roscoe (6288)
1443894 2017-12-21 01:16:00 At the beach I see the Black-backed gulls flying up with shells and dropping and then eating the contents. All very entertaining when I'm trying to get good Natural History pics. :) R.M. (561)

This is the reason why snail bait, those little green pellets, is such a bad idea in the garden.

1443898 2017-12-21 08:26:00 The Thrushes love smashing snails over my concrete pavers and retainer wall top. I recently removed a flax bush full of snails and the birds had a wonderful time. Jen (38)
