1443811 2017-12-19 05:12:00 Do you guys get Netflix?

I have binged on Broadchurch . . . . and although I loved the whole two seasons - (there should been many more seasons) . . . . . I had a really bad time understanding what language the guy was speaking .

There were a few English words sprinkled in it, but the most of it was undecipherable . I think he's Scottish with a speech abnormality . Either way - I like his way of yelling when he doesn't get his way . . . . which is a LOT of the time .

I had to play it over and over again to get MOST of the words . The place looked like another of those minor-type British Isles ---- kinda like where Doc Martin is filmed - only colder .

Has anyone else seen it too?

I binged on the whole line of shows for Longmire, The Mysteries of Laura and Person of Interest .

Highway To Hell is another good show - it's about the Continental Railroad crossing the US from Atlantic to Pacific .

Wishing I could find Boston Legal too .

The Father Brown Mysteries are great - I read every book I could find when I was in high school in California .

1443814 2017-12-19 05:43:00 Never crossed my mind to turn ON the CC., Now I have to go back and watch all the shows all over again.... SurferJoe46 (51)
1443815 2017-12-19 05:48:00 We can have Netflix but its a very watered down service with a lot of stuff not available here in NZ. I can't be bothered personally since we hardly ever watch TV. gary67 (56)
1443816 2017-12-19 06:33:00 I'm afraid Joe your American ears need tuning :) I just had a shufty (English slang from the Arabic meaning a quick look)at Broadchurch which is supposed to be in mid-Dorset, and a read of Wiki about it, they use a generic west country accent which would be quite intelligible to most English ears even if they don't come from the West Country.

The cop is played by a Scotsman, David Tennant again quite intelligible really, but American ears may have difficulty.

The accent isn't the same as spoken in East Dorset where I lived for seven years, but it has a west country burr which is close enough for TV and most English ears :)

1443817 2017-12-19 07:44:00 I think Netflix is improving over time as new content becomes available. Obviously sky won't be getting rights to any more Netflix originals now that Netflix is here themselves.
I checked and Only Broadchurch and Longmire are available here out of the series mentioned. Personally I don't find David Tennant particularly hard to understand, there are much worse Scots accents around

1443818 2017-12-19 17:47:00 I'm in a rambling mood this morning .

I'll likely talk about anything . There may be several unattached, meandering paragraphs .

I was watching Broadchurch with a friend who comes to Sunday dinner with my wife and me . He's from Georgia . That's Georgia in the US, not Russia .

He speaks with such a heavy Georgian accent that most people in Montana can't understand him . . . . I have to translate for him like it was a foreign language . It's not really . . . . he just speaks with a lot of mush in his mouth . At least that's how it sounds to most northerners . That's why people who come from that area are called "Mushies" or "Mushmouths" .

"Mush" is corn, ground up into a porrage and served as breakfast with fried eggs and Postum, a coffee substitute for youngsters .

Anyway . . . . my friend Rick from Georgia couldn't understand the Scotsman either . . . . . . they were too far apart . . . pole-wise in the spoken King's English language department .

Even so I can understand that youse guys might find his accent understandable, including spotting the locale of his accent .

A Georgian accent is nowhere the same as a Virginian accent . . . . and certainly many light years apart from a Southern Texican accent . That's half Texan-half Mexican .

I think that the people in that Broadchurch series spoke too softly and mumbled a lot . I had to turn the volume up pretty high just to hear them say things I couldn't understand . All in all, I very much enjoyed it, even if I had to hit PAUSE or spool back 20 seconds to hear the dialog over again so we could discuss what we thought they might've said .

Sometimes one show would take us an additional 20 minutes to get to the end .

Wonder if, maybe, there'll be more episodes? Hope so . It wasn't Mary Poppins, but pretty gritty in some places although i feel a greater percentage of the suspense to me was not understanding what was like hearing Lilluputian .

If any of you watched Broadchurch and Longmire . . . . Did you recognize the same dichotomy of the male supervisor and the sharp, intelligent woman wingman in both shows?

Did I just get "formula-ized" by two tv serials that used that same plot?

BTW the name of the county in which Longmire is supposedly shot, Absaroka County, Wyoming, is not real and if it existed, would actually border on Montana, 'way over on the southern-eastern border . The actual filming was done in New Mexico though . In a few instances Longmire supposedly wanders over the state line into Montana .

He would have no authority in Montana unless he was in "fresh pursuit" of a suspect, with whom he had not allowed out of his sight . Once he lost sight of his prey he'd have to call Montana authorities to let him go with them as their guest officer . . . . . . . if they would even consider that .

This isn't just true of Montana though . Each state exercises it's own sovereignty under a Federal-Constitutional guideline .

In that: Federal laws trump state laws and state laws trump county laws and county laws trump city laws . Unincorporated zones outside of city jurisdictions are usually under the county in which they lie .

I live in an unincorporated part of Hamilton . . . . . and the state police and county officers have jurisdiction here . We have a High Sheriff and his deputies as our primary law officers, with the Montana Highway Patrol as adjunct officers . . . . who have statewide jurisdiction .

Everybody speaks the same dialect though . I heard a MHP with a pretty strong Texas drawl once . . . . . but he was still very intelligible .

Lastly, I admired Longmire's 1911 Colt . 45 ACP . I thought I wanted one . . . . not an original . 45, but a more recent replica . The 1911 . 45 ACP was issued as a people-stopper by the US military as a sidearm for officers . The . 38 Spl was incapable of stopping someone in full charge with a sword or knife, instead making six neat little holes in them . Very ineffective

I've instead opted for a Glock Model 40, 10mm Gen V instead .

The reason is that a 45 ACP doesn't have the knock-down of a 10mm . I've been having too many bear-incidents when I'm fishing to want to use pepper spray for protection . Glock is a fine weapon, and since we are allowed CCW* here in Montana, I'll have no legal problem carrying one .

*CCW is: Carry Concealed Weapon .

As it is, we can carry fully loaded in our vehicles even though I have no reason to unless I'm going fishing . Returning, I'll probably unload it and keep it concealed in the vehicle .

I got stopped in my '86 Chevy K10 Blazer once . The cops in town knew me only by my Orange Amigo, and once the cop knew that I also owned this vehicle too, he said that he thought my headlights might be out of adjustment . They weren't . . . . but he needed "probable cause" to stop me .

During the stop, I assumed the "felony stop" driver's position of putting my hands both on the dashboard . When he came to my driver's side window, he looked for a moment and then asked me if I came from California . I said yes, and he laughed at me with my hands on the dashboard-full view . He told me to relax and told me that if I have a firearm in the vehicle to not even tell him . He didn't want to know about . . . or see it .

He said he really just wanted to know who was driving this vehicle . I told him he didn't need probable cause for me and he could stop me any time he wanted to talk . I invited him to a coffee across the street* and we went and had a nice chat .

* the name of the restaurant is "The Coffee Cup" . . . . what a novelty, huh?

The cops here are a bunch of pretty nice guys and appreciate that a civilian would buy them coffee and pie . I couldn't do what they do . I told him that .

I went to a "Bear Clinic" when I got my first fishing license in Montana . The clinic was free, only 30 minutes long and was at a local coffee shop in town and the first cup of coffee was free for all attendees .

The Ranger told us about the value of using Pepper, or Bear Spray .

It would be more humane . . . . and black bears are more afraid of people than grizzly bears or brown bears . We'd more likely see black bears anyway .

That was reassuring to know . (people 1 pt, bears 0)

He also told us that climbing a tree is a very bad thing to do, since all bears but Grizzlies climb trees . A Grizzly bear's claws aren't designed to climb a tree after you . Grizzly's claws were designed to rip a victim to shreds and were specialized just for that purpose .

He said that if we had a bear climb a tree and eat us, we could rest assured that it wouldn't be a Griz . This was not reassuring . (bears 1 pt, people 0)

He also told us to wear the little bells on our belt or sing out loud to let a bear know we were in the woods, so we wouldn't scare them unexpectedly . That would supposedly give the bear a chance to leave before we'd arrive . (people 1 pt, bears 0)

One guy asked how we'd know if a bear had recently been in the area .

The Ranger said we should look for bear scat . . . . (NZ = Bear Poop), as that it was sure evidence that bears are in the area .

Another guy asked how to tell bear scat from deer scat .

The Ranger said that bear scat usually smells like pepper and would have tiny bells in it .

I want a Glock 10mm .

1443819 2017-12-19 18:00:00 With Closed Captions, I was able to get through all the Broadchurch series in half the time :) Zippity (58)
1443820 2017-12-19 18:24:00 I never understood 'bingeing' until I got a free sub to Lightbox thru Spark.

Then I found all the seasons of Suits, and re-watched House all over again. And Outrageous Fortune.

Be good to find Boston Legal. Thinki I saw the last two episodes (ever) and didn't realise what I had been missing!
