2017-12-04 22:01:00 | I don't know how to describe this "fault / feature" so I have no idea where I might start searching the forum for a possible "cure". At some time, recently, possibly after one of the auto-updates that MS imposes on W10 users, my web searching has become a source of frustration. I'll try and describe the nuisance as best I can. The problem only occurs when using MS Edge, not with IE. With Edge, if I visit a web site (eg NZ Herald) from a previously opened tab, then open a link (news item) within that site in a new window and after viewing that linked item, perhaps by scrolling down through several "pages" length, and then close that window the action of the mouse scroll wheel is to scroll through all of the previous web sites that had been opened in the tab. That scrolling action can be defeated by left clicking somewhere on the "home" page, but if I forget to do that, the "feature" takes over. This, to me, is immensely frustrating. It's something that I would rather not have but if I knew how to turn it off/on, maybe there would be occasions that I might find it useful. Sorry for the long winded description, but where do I find the "switch" for this feature? Thanks for your help. Old AG

2017-12-04 23:42:00 | I'm sorry that I wasted some of your precious time, 1101. I thought I had come to a site that was frequented by knowledgeable folk who could help others with PC type problems. Whatever your opinions of MS products might be, trite answers do nothing to advance your cause. Your emoticons reveal much about you. Senior Member, with 5,000 plus posts: maybe some of them ha I came here, and asked a question. Is it too much to advance a possible answer to a problem without resorting to denigrating the application in question, and ultimately say nothing? Perhaps there is somebody out there who really does have an answer?

2017-12-05 00:43:00 | I wish I could be more helpful but I'm just going to agree with 1101, I think you might have trouble finding someone who actually uses Edge to answer that. So while fixing Edge is your question, using a different browser might be the only answer most of us can offer. I wanted to like Edge, I prefer not to install multiple programs that do the same thing. But every time I've tried it I've gone back to Chrome in frustration.

2017-12-05 04:53:00 | There could be a problem in Edge alone since the mouse appears to be working fine in other browsers. Have to agree with you Old_a_g, its annoying when asking for help and just get redirected to another program, that's not fixing the problem its ignoring it. ;) So with that in mind you can try this, it may or may not work. If it doesn't then there's other options to getting edge working again. In the search, (to the right of the start Button/4 squares) 8483 Click the search, type in CMD Right click the result, run as administrator. When it opens type in exactly (or copy paste) the command: dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth Press the enter key, it will start to scan, you'll get this: 8484 when its finished ( may take a while and appear to stop/ Hang - it hasn't) if it says the component store can be repaired (similar wording) then type in and press enter: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth Usually doesn't need to reboot but cant hurt. See if Edge is working correctly. If its not then we'll have to rip it out and reinstall it, that fixes the majority of problems with Edge (quite simple) with instructions, but see how the above goes first. :)

2017-12-05 07:50:00 | Thanks w-tech. At least you made a suggestion of help, even if it didn't work :( As I said in the original post, I believe that this "feature" is something that has been introduced recently; I don't recall having this problem when the pc was new(er), which makes me think that it has something buried in the settings which still eludes me. IE still works OK. I should also point out that Edge is not a browser that I installed; it was already there as the default browser when I first fired up the (new) machine. BTW. The "Search" icon no longer exists on the task bar - can I get it back? I know that I can get to CMD from the WIN key and start typing but the "search" icon maybe is a more elegant access point. Uninstall & reinstall: is that the next step? Is it a case of google is your friend?:)

2017-12-05 08:38:00 | Old_a_g -- its not a "new feature" in Edge, its a corruption I suspect. I use edge the majority of the time and its never done what you described. The following may or may not fix it. If it doesn't then its not edge directly. Edge may be corrupted, reinstalling often fixes most problems BUT the opposite can also happen, sometimes it makes it worse once its back. I have reinstalled Edge many times in earlier editions of customers computers without problems. Normally if Edge does break completely then there's actually another problem. Could write it all out, BUT found a good video that shows how. Follow it exactly ( read it first so it makes sense ) , First though to get the search back try this. right click on the task bar - Search see if its ticked to be shown. 8485 When you remove Edge and put it back it deletes EVERYTHING in edge, including any favorites /bookmarks, and any settings its like its first run. So if you have any bookmarks note what they are. How to remove and reinstall Edge Browser www.youtube.com When you try to delete the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe” Folder, sometimes it wont go, so delete as much of its contents as possible and make sure edge is fully closed. There are other ways but that's a little more indepth. Just a thought a quick workaround. In Search type "Control" Open the control panel - mouse - Wheel - drop the tilt to 0 see if it stops. 8486

2017-12-05 10:42:00 | Thanks for your suggestions, w-tech. The minimum value for vertical and horizontal scrolling is one - can't select zero. My normal setting is one anyway, so no advance there. The search line simply doesn't exist in the Task Bar context menu, so can't "un-hide" it. Have followed the Edge reinstallation instruction to the letter - no change to the behaviour. Maybe I'll learn to get used to it, or return to IE. old AG

2017-12-05 18:59:00 | The Search: Could have some sort of corruption ( highly suspect it has) OR some sort of third party start menu program installed. You can try running the sfc /scannow command, this will check the system files for any problems (doesn't always find or fix them all) again found a video that's shows how www.youtube.com If the mouse is still playing up, narrow down as to where the problem actually is --Try another mouse, see if it still does the same. Since its still causing problems after reinstalling Edge back to default (including all its settings) I suspect its not actually Edge causing the problem. It will be something minor that's causing it, usually is, the "fun" ;) is trying to locate the problem, then the fix usually doesn't take long.

2017-12-05 20:45:00 | I'm sorry that I wasted some of your precious time, 1101. mate, spoken like a true 14year old . Some ... products ... are ... not ...worth...fixing Edge doesnt even work properly with some of MS's own products (admitted by MS) Its default search will put bogus hits before legit sites, leading less than savvy users god knows where Lets get another opinion or 2 "At Pwn2Own 2017, an event where hackers exploit devices to win prizes and show tech companies what patches they need to make, Edge came off as the least secure browser, with hackers successfully exploiting it five times. Chrome was the most secure as it wasn't hacked at all" "Microsoft Edge should have been a big deal for Microsoft. Instead, it’s an awkward half-baked experience that most Windows 10 users don’t bother with" So I stand by my reply . Dump it . Go to Chrome or FF Unless your time is so worthless that your are prepared to spend alot of time trying to fix its issues BTW , when the garage tells me my car isnt worth fixing , I accept(and ignore) that advice rather than ranting back at them have a nice day . :banana :clap:mad:
