1442768 2017-11-29 03:04:00 I have been trying to do backups onto two different external hard drives . On one (Western Digital) the backup goes fine, no probs . However on the other external hard drive (Seagate) I keep getting the message "The semaphore timeout period has expired" Error Code 0x80070079 . The Seagate has performed well in the past . This is from a Windows 10 desktop .

Now, I have looked up suggestions from Microsoft but they seem mainly to relate to the desktop . However the issue here seems to be with the particular external hard drive . I have run a chkdsk on the Seagate, and it is fine in that respect . The files that I get the error message with range from 98 Mgs, down to 5 . 3Mgs, so the size does not seem to be an issue . The files are all photos, except for a few videos . Initially it seemed that the error came up with the videos, however I moved them all and now am getting the same problem with the photos . Some are RAW and some JPEG, PSD and Affinity - but no clues there .

What can I try now please? Hopefully I do not have to format the drive, but if that is the last resort . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ! :(

1442769 2017-11-29 04:03:00 Looks like this prob can also be USB related. Some sites say to remove any USB devices that are not in use. It may also be the USB cable.

If the hdd is USB 3 some people managed to fix this error by using a USB 2 cable. or if you're using a USB 3 port plug it into a USB 2 port

Also whats the hdd formatted in?? Altho, it may not (or shouldn't) make a diff with small files

1442770 2017-11-29 21:55:00 yep, I have had that problem too with a Seagate portable.

For some reason the drive thinks it's not doing anything and goes into "sleep" mode

I have tried a few things, but nothing has worked very well.

This is a known problem with some Seagate portables......

If you navigate to the drive and open a different folder every 5 minutes or so, (to keep the drive "awake") is the only thing I have had any success with

1442771 2017-12-01 00:05:00 Thanks Speedy and bevy. I was using a USB3 connection from the back of my desktop, which had worked fine in the past. I have now tried plugging in to USB2 and it is working fine, though very slowly - of course!

Been out this morning and have bought a new Western Digital Passport USB3 and 2TB size. My existing EHD's are only 1TB, but I now have so many photos that I was going to need the extra space in the not too distant
future. Life is too short to lose too much time with such hassles. Thanks again!
