1442699 2017-11-27 06:47:00 There's a new distro coming to this puter: 8460

and I got it to immediately accept the WSKY WiFi adapter .

Funny that ---> I couldn't get this one to accept it at all when I had it in my studio . . . . . . . well, now I might get it to run what I ultimately want - Ubuntu 16 . 04 and Studio with a dose of ZORIN on it in a three-way grub booter-thingy .

Wish me well - but I'm going to try to roll around in this by myself for a while and take the pressure off'n youse guys for a bit . :nerd:

The other 'puter is still running just great - although the Ubuntu - Vanilla Flavored distro still mucks itself up all the time . Too bad, but it MAY be an Athlon created and somehow also a processor limiting problem .

Besides that - I cannot get Linux ANYthing to see that the Athlon Mobo is more than 32 bit, so there's that too .

Ah well - I'll try this one for which the screenshot was posted here .

1442700 2017-11-27 21:43:00 Good luck, Joe!

That hardware isn't the latest, but it's surprising how well the old Pentium 4 can run with even recent Linux releases. My modest multimedia PC (HP small form factor Pentium 4HT with 2Gb memory connected to my 32" TV) runs Xubuntu 14.04 pretty well. I'm using Kodi on it and the performance is acceptable.

If your PC is running the live version without problems it should be OK when installed.

1442701 2017-11-27 22:36:00 I forgot about the Live version, and I didn't think it would be fast enough to actually see if I appreciated it enough or not. Accessing the DVD and running resident in RAM makes me think it wold be pretty slow.

[so much to learn]

1442702 2017-11-27 22:50:00 Umm, I thought the screenshot above was from the live CD/DVD/USB you were trying out. That's why I thought your PC is a Pentium 4.

The live versions work best from USB (fastest) but generally the more of the OS is resident in ram the faster it will perform as memory is way faster than the fastest hard drive, even faster than an SSD.

1442703 2017-11-27 23:38:00 The screenshot (above) is the 'puter that the new distros are going on . . . . . I am still playing with this puter (Athlon, 2x 3500+) and is a kinda testbed for distros .

I have a lot less trouble with the IBM Stink-Center desktop environment . If I had my druthers, the Athlon 'puter would be long gone . . . the i386/Pentium is a lot safer for things L-based methinks .

What do you know about Antergos? It just caught my eye and I've gone and downloaded an . iso of it, burning now to a DVD and I'll try to see if it plays nicely with a n00b like me .

Aha! The drawer's opened - BB Soon . :waughh:

1442704 2017-11-28 00:47:00 Yeah, I admit I am biased when it comes to CPU's, I've always been an Intel guy.

This beauty laptop I've just bought (early Xmas present to myself) for just under $NZ190 (including a new hard drive) is another Intel CPU (Core-i5). It's an ex-lease business laptop (HP EliteBook 8460p). It runs the latest Mint 18.2 KDE version fantastically well.

I've heard of Antergos (distrowatch.com) but I've never used it myself.

Have you ever tried a distro with the KDE desktop environment, Joe? KDE Plasma 5 is the latest and it does look and feel a bit like Windows which isn't a bad thing in my book. It has the "flat" look that is so in fashion just now, I didn't like it much at first but it is growing on me.
