2018-01-07 10:48:00 | Montana gets a lot of it's fruit from Southern California . Southern California, in truth, gets IT'S fruit from South America - picked too early and not even near ripe - and lets it ripen about the boat, treating it with poisonous gasses to turn them bright colors . IN-side --- the fruit's hard like a potato and tastes about as good . I was eating big red - hard apples that had no taste and just thought "Hey - I'm getting older now and I can't taste an apple or a peach or a pear or cherries or grapes - so it must be ME!" Then a friend invited us up to 'help harvest' her apples in Chihuahua Valley, SoCal . We went and I picked a few before I grabbed one for myself . Ohmygod! The flavor was so intense that it blew the top of my head off! It wasn't ME - it was South American fruits and veggies that have no taste at all! FWIW: we put an apple in a brown paper bag with some bananas to help ripen the bananas . The apple gives off some of the residue 'ripener chemicals' and helps the hard bananas get ripe . It's cheating, I know - and who knows how bad for us the chemicals are - but ya gotta die from SOMEthing ---- right? . Do the still grow grow Sunkist oranges in California? Were common around Auckland vege stores, quite sweet and thin skinned Don't see them much now . Try our NZ Kiwifruit, sweet and soft for well for us more mature or soft gum types . Incidentally use to ripen them with apples/bananas in paper bag in the hot water cupboard (Or USA Airing cupboard I think) .

2018-01-07 16:32:00 | There are still quite a few Sunkist Growers in SoCal . They are mostly in unincorporated areas outside of city limits, and the counties of San Bernardino, Riverside, non-costal Ventura, parts of San Diego . . . . but not so much in Orange County which got it's name from the oranges, grapefruit, lemons and avocados that used to grow there before Walter Disney ruined it all with his glorified amusement park . There's a city called Orange, in Orange County that had railroad and easy highway access that was named for the many packing houses in it . The original name of the city was Olive-Orange Heights, Orange County, California . This later was split into the cities of Orange and Olive Heights when the citrus was starting to come into the US from South America and Mexico . I lived and worked many years ago in that area .

2018-01-07 21:28:00 | I remember, as a child going to the fruit, vegetable and flower market in Christchurch with my grandfather. We would arrive early in the morning after cutting and packing the produce. In the old Chevrolet truck laden with bushel boxes of cabbages, cauliflower, and lettuces. I would watch and listen in fascination as the auctioneer would sell each lot. I remember granddad would get a box of oranges that were rejected due to spots of mould we would take them home to nana and she would cut the bad bits out and chop them up, boil them with some water and sugar then strain the liquid into glass bottles, this suitably diluted, was our 'soft drink' for summer. The thing that I remember most vividly were the many colourful lables on the boxes of oranges I would wonder about this far-away place called California, where there were orange trees everywhere. Still hope to get there one day.

2018-01-07 22:06:00 | Alas, alack Dave . . . . the PLACE is beautiful - more so than one can imagine . It's the people who've slimed it all up . It's mucked-up with a social morass of persons who do not care and those who side up to those who allow them to be non productive members of society . When we arrived there in SoCal in the late summer of 1961 - parents and younger sister and myself - it was truly the most beautiful place I'd ever seen - and have seen since . We had come from New Jersey - so I rest my case on beauty appreciation, anew . Montana is extremely nice even of it weren't that I moved here to be able to breathe air that I did not have to slice - but I DO miss the ocean and the deserts .

These take me back a long way! Some of those labels I recognize . . . because I use to test for mechanical/physical properties (e . g . Burst Strength/Edge Crush/Drop Test) of California fruit corrugated trays, and also analyse their individual liner properties and grammage weights . This was to try replicate similar trays for NZ and other markets . Our test specs were based on the well known US "Rule 41" ( . ipack . com/solutions/rules-regulations-corrugation-truck-rail-rules/" target="_blank">www . ipack . com) Truck and Rail transport corrugated specs . Many of our original test equipment were bought from the US . I worked and trained with a few US Liner-board/Pulp/Packaging/coating suppliers . . . eventually International Paper from US bought us out . Anyway . . . would rail be largely used to transport those oranges? Also wondering if water irrigation to many of those orange orchards water was supplied from the 700 mile California catchment supply ( . capradio . org/articles/2013/10/07/californias-water-supply-a-700-mile-journey/" target="_blank">www . capradio . org) - including the Oroville dam . . |
