1443233 2017-12-12 05:13:00 Isn't Unity just a shell for gnome?

Apparently it is, but I don't use Ubuntu myself and I am merely trying to help someone who no-one else seems willing to.
It requires me to maintain several virtual machines so I can try stuff for him.
In many cases I am stumbling around in the dark, and smug suggestions and sniping does not help.
So you are happy to support Joe from now on?
Thank you and good on you.

Geez . . . . you guys are great for all this information . I appreciate it more than you will know . I try to be less and less of a pest about this Linux-thing, and although I am here asking for help a lot probably by F1 standards, it has helped me immensely .

And and ALL help is good - even wrong help is good since it will always teach me something to keep in my mind .

I am coming to Linux pretty late in life - almost 72 y/o right now - well, in April anyway .

BTW: that Chrome installation worked a charm - I have a new icon on the side of the desktop and I even moved it up just under FF 57 where I can use either as I need or see fit .

Dave - I had no idea you had a lot of VMs running just for my problems - thank-you hugely! FWIW - I dislike using the power button on the tower - as I feel it has a very good possibility of damaging the distro .

Today I re-booted after I accidentally unplugged the power cord behind my desk (that won't happen again!) and I had to use F12 to get a boot sequence to run correctly and find Ubuntu . All I had was my MOBO's flash screen and it just hung there .

Shower time for me and some sleep . I've got the wife's 2000 Astro Van dashboard all apart diagnosing and fixing a poor heat problem . I got it, but then I need a few itty bitty light bulbs that I didn't want to tear the dash all apart for JUST them - but with the heater work, well it's a natural extension of the job . It was 11*F when I was out there working on it - although the sun was brightly shining . Didm't feel cold until I got into the house . I love the seasonal weather here .

And NO smog!

It's +2*F here right now at 23:53, Monday .

1443235 2017-12-12 07:56:00 A bit cold there Joe, changeable here at the bottom of the South Island.
Two days ago it was 26 Celsius today 14, the joys of an island climate, it will be 26 again in a few days
my tomato plant is very confused.
I use the virtual machines because I prefer Linux Mint myself but not everything in it
is identical to Ubuntu, so better to check stuff out on the real thing.
I must say I am impressed with the way you have adapted to Linux, persistence pays in the end!
I remember some of your earlier attempts, where you found it a bit difficult.

Stay warm

1443236 2017-12-13 10:18:00 I'm in a similar situation regarding differences in Linux distros myself, Dave.

I abandoned Ubuntu when Unity arrived (tried to like it, but disliked it the more I used it) and switched to Kubuntu in 2011. Been happy with Kubuntu since. I tried Mint Cinnamon but still prefer KDE. I've got Mint KDE 18.2 installed on this laptop but it's about 95% the same as Kubuntu anyway.

So, I'm guessing sometimes how to handle Joe's problems myself as while it's all *buntu underneath the top layer varies significantly.

I must agree that Joe has made great progress in understanding Linux, much better than some others I've tried to 'convert' who quickly gave up when they couldn't do things quite the 'Windows' way.

Dave, thanks for helping Joe, I'm not always on this forum and hang out on the Kubuntu forum more these days.

Keep at it Joe, it's really worth it ... and I'm not so young either (65 next August).
