1443656 2017-12-30 00:47:00 But when you want to go to the park, it takes you to the shops.

And it calls all the hawkers and tells them where you're going so they can have their stalls set up when you arrive.

It picks up hitchikers without your permission, who look through your glovebox and take what they want.

It randomly decides it needs repairs and stops in it's tracks while you wait for it to finish.

And even though you quite like the model you have it is replaced every few months with a new one, with all new problems, and the controls in different places.

And it is easy to break into so gets broken into all the time and you need to pay for third party locks and an alarm system.

Analogies are fun! :D

Very good!

It can also be said for Android and Apple.

Heres a post from another forum, back in 2015, the changing has been around for a long time and it wont stop anytime soon. This goes for all OS's

The second people stop upgrading their OS's on Apple products to promote their longevity, is the second Apple upgrades the backend that the products connect to to say "Oh sorry, you can't use this feature anymore because our current infrastructure only supports connections from the latest OS to provide customers with the best experience."

When you're an Apple consumer, you do not have control over your experience, the experience has control over you... don't pretend otherwise. With the redesign of the Mac Pro series, the last bastion of user-friendly design built to "last" (the G4) went away... more and more pro-sumers and Production bodies are switching to Linux and Windows platforms every day.

These days There are more and more calls from people wanting a MAC fixed mainly due to software corruption.

1443658 2017-12-30 01:31:00 So have installed Mint Cinnamon.
My Unix guru friend is running XFCE (on one of his 17 various computers with all sorts - from Xenixx to more modern) , but his hardware is lesser than mine.

So Windows like? No...just occurred to me after hunting around and finding where things are now. It's more like Workbench.

Which is a good thing IMO, I was slightly horrified at Windows after Workbench, (registry, library arrangement and such).
Haven't had to ask anything yet, Google helped.

Sorted printer driver, which so far has been the only thing that needed attention.
Installed Wine and run a couple of things - Mozbackup and so on.

Prettied desktop, copied over my backed up files, see what I come with playing with some of those...

Downloaded some suggested useful tools.

All pretty easy so far, remembering bits and pieces, sudo and such.
Of course I didn't do Linux much at all, and it's been a long time so no doubt Google will get some more enquiries but so far so good.

If I can run it all - either Linux apps or via Wine then I'll overwrite my main HDD and goodbye Windows, but for now thats unplugged.

Quite amusing watching the 1MB download! 7MB installed business. Ah yes, those were the days....who needs TBs?

Just a little heads-up. ;) If you're having trouble running a windows programme under Wine, install Winetricks as well from Synaptic Packet Manager.

Worked for me on a couple of progremmes. ;)

1443660 2017-12-30 03:48:00 Hi Dave
Why do you take things so personally?

Not taking it personally, just don't think you have a clue what you are talking about :)

1443661 2017-12-30 04:45:00 Just a note of caution on W10%, it is actually only mock s*** as you will discover if you try throwing it on the garden as compost. Since it is made only of fake smoke and virtual mirrors, there is no way anything useful will grow on it. On the good side, it is unlikely to grow on you.

I know what I am talking about.
Its just that you keep trying to change the topic.

Or you could try running it on Windows 10.
(Unless its a very old program)

Its just that you keep trying to change the topic. That often happens when people get asked a question and either cant or wont answer it truthfully -- Politicians are brilliant at it.

How many times on TV do you see a reporter ask a question and the answer given often leaves you thinking WTF  What was the question/answer.
