684212 2008-07-01 06:52:00 Dear all,
What are the legal issues involved in recording music off the radio channels and keeping them for your own use only? I would be interested in knowing how New Zealand and other countries interpret this.

Cheers :)

684213 2008-07-01 06:53:00 US..it's OK yet...or right now..but soon it will be illegal

684215 2008-07-01 07:35:00 Yup it's illegal in NZ, you're only allowed to record for the purposes of timeshifting (meaning you are only allowed to listen to it once, then you have to delete it). Erayd (23)

I am not a legal person but.......

I understand that as of a few months ago it became legal to timeshift or format shift audio.

but you cant time shift or format shift video....

so you can rip a CD for personal use.
you can't rip a DVD.

684218 2008-07-01 08:28:00 Have a look here:-
arstechnica.com

Fair use seems to be legal in so far as I may be able to change formats etc.

Check out page 16 of the July New Zealand PC World as well. There is some info there but one would think a case has not gone to a court at this time so copyright law may be interpreted in a manner you may not expect.

684220 2008-07-01 10:12:00 Say nothing, do nothing, if it is for your own personal listening pleasure who is going to know.

Mr Plod is not going to stop you on the street, "excuse me sir can I listen to the music on your iPod and see if it is legal?" I think not.

684221 2008-07-01 11:17:00 Okay, I will only listen to my recorded music once then.

I may just check it a few times for deterioration though before I eventually listen to it.
