684188 2008-07-08 22:20:00 Initially I thought it was a rip-off too but having dealt with brain-injured people, it can take a lot of time and care to ensure they understand the advice they are receiving.
The rates reflect the cost of years of education and the expenses of running a business.

His lawyer charged $49 to read an electronic "thank you" e-card Mr Tariq had sent him.
separate billings of $490 for a pre-conference meeting at the firm's Redfern Office, $A98 each for Mr Scroope's 1.9-kilometre journey to the southern part of the CBD, $A490 each for the conference at which all three cases were settled, another triple $A98 charge for the trip back to Redfern and $A245 charged to each for a post-conference meeting held with all three present.

Come on Winston. Husband is a plumber, he does free quotes, doesn't charge extra for weekends and sure doesn't charge for ph calls or emails either.

Neither do I.
Or maybe a special case should be made for lawyers?

684189 2008-07-09 02:16:00 No argument Pctek, I agree with you.

I'll give you another couple of examples of this stupidity by lawyers which raised complaints:

One billed for "attending on your funeral".......and another "for telephoning you when you weren't there"......

Idiots.

Go figure. :yuck:

684190 2008-07-09 23:13:00 My Brother is a lawyer. He told me once about an incident where he charged $700.00 for writing a single letter on his client's behalf.

But... it cost him many thousands of dollars and years of study (Ba + LLb) to be able to qualify to do his job; it cost him many hours of research time to correctly identify the facts behind this particular case; it saved his client nearly $9 000.00.

$700.00 well earned in my opinion.

Lots of us could say that . Anyone with a decent qual did years of study .
I did a fair bit too once .

So we should all be charging outrageous prices for silly little things?

Then dentists should be charging a $100,000 a minute .

684192 2008-07-10 00:29:00 It all depends on how the invoice is presented. Letter to x, $700 is less informative than Letter to x, 8hrs preparation $700.

One of John Grisham's novels (The Firm??) had an explanation of how to inflate billable hours by just picking up a client file an initialling the cover. Lots of small actions tend to inflate the total if each is charged at the minimum charge period.

684193 2008-07-10 02:34:00 Be aware, that particular lawyer would be in absolutely unknown territory with a thank-you letter. R2x1 (4628)

LOL!

True. Especially when he charges like he does.

684195 2008-07-10 09:37:00 dentists should be charging a $100,000 a minute. Is it apparent from your comment that you'd be daft enough to pay that sort of money for a proffessional service? Greg (193)
684196 2008-07-10 17:52:00 In my view any service is worth what the going rate is and what you can afford to pay.

Parliament makes laws and also amendments to the same laws and we have to keep up. This is what lawyers do. Hopefully they keep up anyway otherwise they are not worth feeding or payments either.

From what I manage to gather there are a number of people who do not vote and some here whom have not reached the age where they could.

I do also realise that ignorance of the law is no excuse but once again the whole deal is open to the way the laws are interpreted.

Take a little one here:-
Say I said to a person, "G'day you old bastard." Would that person take offence by assuming I meant that person had been born without the benefit of his parents having been married before the birth of that person?
