683912 2008-06-30 21:10:00 I just bought a new computer. What new OS did I get. It wasn't Vista, Linux or a MAC OS.
:)

683913 2008-06-30 21:19:00 I've decided I'm going to try and hold out till 7. Should be an interesting experiment.

[Bruce hugs his XP - plus his copies of XP he bought for that rainy day]

But hey - I've always run XP with the "classic interface", so I guess I'm not a modern kind of guy ...

683914 2008-06-30 21:25:00 I do skin XP (Luna5) because I got very sick of all the normal themes, (Seeing it for 10+ hours more than 300 days a year for several years) but apart from that, it's great.

I also have a couple of copies of XP set aside for that rainy day...:p

Vista can be run using Classic menus as well.

I was a Happy XP Chappie with Vista as dual boot. Never used Vista much at all.

Now, with a new lappy, and only Vista, I have settled in quite nicely thank you. Don't know what all the fuss is about. Nearly a month now and no problems.

There's very little wrong with vista - most complaints were caused Pre Sp1, and people running it with underpowered PCs . I'm happy with it - but XP is still good aswell .

I am not to well up on tech matters but I feel Vista got bad press 'cause it seems like it really needs a new machine.

My old lappy which daughter is to get, was labelled Vista capable. Had 1GB of RAM but ran like a dog on Vista. Hence my choice of staying with XP.

Before giving it to daughter, I have tried it out with Vista back on and upgraded to SP1. It now runs a hell of a lot better. I am happy for her to have it with Vista. Wouldn't have thought that a couple of months ago.

Does this sound logical??

683918 2008-06-30 21:53:00 Vista XP - XP Vista - I run both - personally I like some of the features of Vista, and it makes some of XP's features look old and out dated.

Basic changes we all see - Ignore " under the hood" that the general home user doesn't know the first thing about.

I think some of the biggest disappointments were / are that most were expecting some huge graphical change, far more security, and faster.

But thats where MS are caught between a rock and a hard place - you get warning about apps requiring permission - UAC - Its a pain but can be turned off = Less security.
I have had a play with linux - guess what - damn permission to do things - same as UAC - That may be able to be turned Off I don't know enough about Linux to say ?

With Vista - the layout similar to XP, just in a few different places - BUT think about all the moans if MS radically changed the layout, it would be like a complete new operating system, at least in its current form it doesn't take to much to get used to it - take office 07 for example - the Ribbon, totally different to previous versions - and look at some of the complaints.

If MS changed to much all at once it would be like trying to write with your other hand - some would find it easy, some it would be almost impossible.

Yes it does - I know several people who have done exactly the same thing. Sp1 made it so much nicer to use.

The "Vista Ready" or "Vista Capable" stickers are a load of garbage. That's like sticking an "XP Capable" sticker on a 486 laptop with 128MB RAM. It will run yeah, but damn it will be horrible to use.
