Dunedin doctor in digital dilemma

A Dunedin doctor has apologised after he referred 20 men for prostate investigations when the trouble was at the tip of his own finger.
The digital dilemma arose when Dunedin general practitioner Isaac Rooney injured his right index finger at a charity cricket match, rendering him unable to do rectal examinations with the finger of choice.
It was bad timing as the injury occurred just before his practice marked Prostate Awareness Week, Doctor magazine reported.
Dr Rooney said he was extremely right handed and had difficulty using his left hand for anything.
"I tried doing rectal exams using my ring finger (pardon the pun) but it was hopeless, so I used my left index.
"That was bad enough, but unknown to me, I had a small dermatofibroma on the fingertip."
A dermatofibroma is a harmless skin growth, usually in the form of a rounded bump.
"I diagnosed 20 cases of nodular prostate that week and inundated the urology clinic with referrals," he said. The Mainland Medical Council has opted for leniency in the case and was not planning to press charges.
A spokesperson said it was just one of those things and an unforeseen outcome of a charitable deed.
"I can only apologise," said Dr Rooney.

684822 2008-07-03 02:00:00 Ummmmmm, I maybe wrong, but did he say his dermatofibroma had inundated the urology clinic because his finger had infected others?.....

OMG, does that mean he wasnt wearing gloves?.................LOLOLOLOLOL:yuck:

684823 2008-07-03 02:02:00 Our family doctor of 30 odd years (since retired) used to apologise everytime he had to carry out the aforementioned procedure.

He used to say... "I'm sorry, this procedure is best carried out by a young doctor who hasn't got bad swollen arthritic joints in his finger like mine."

Used to crack me up (excuse the pun)

No. He was incorrectly diagnosing because of the lump on his finger.

684826 2008-07-03 03:13:00 Me, I much prefer a blood test to establish PSA levels. Much less intrusive. :) johcar (6283)
