| 813359 | 2009-09-24 06:20:00 | I hope this prompts some "I've seen that before" replies. WIN XPPro Friends PC does not show the CD/DVDRW in Windows Explorer In Control Panel -- System--Hardware and under CD/DVD Drives there is a Combo IDE5253CO shown with the yellow exclamation mark. Tray opens and closes OK I can uninstall the drive and at reboot, it is detected at "Found new hardware" and loads the driver When looking at the properties of the newly found device it tells me "Windows successfully loaded device drivers but cannot find the hardware" I have moved the drive from the 2nd IDE to share on the 1st IDE with the HDD and the same happens. I have installed a brand new ASUS combo drive with the same issues It seems strange that both the old and new are detected by the bios and O/S but the system is not letting me do anything with them. Any ideas ?? Please!!! |

Both IDE cables are "Cable select" cables with the missing connectors, but I tried both Combo drives on the 2nd IDE as Master and Cable select and slave and on the primary IDE as Slave and Cable select. Same problem. I cant see how it could be the O/S but am beginning to think that a fresh install might be in order?? Thanks for the quick response |

| 813364 | 2009-09-24 23:21:00 | a long shot but... A while back , some music CD's (sony??) installed a rootkit on PC's to try & stop the CD being copied. This caused all sorts of issues, & uninstalling it made it worse. |

I don't have the PC now as my "mate" has had a hissy fit and has taken his PC back, as he now has another friend who has told him that its just a jumper setting and its easily fixed. Not quite sure how a jumper moves from one setting to another while the PC is in use, but of course, stranger things have happened (not) I suspect it is something he has done/installed and is having a case of the guilts and doesn't want to admit it. No doubt when he calms down I will hear back from him and we will get it resolved,. Thanks again HH |
