He won't do that because he enjoys baiting him.
Ken has said he is not interested in this topic but he keeps reading and posting - go figure.

Ken is like a broken record - just more of the same every time he posts.

I am surprised that the mods have not had a quiet word with him to caution him about his attitude.

686503 2008-07-08 22:07:00 As with printer manufacturers making most if not all their profit from the ink used, I'd expect that most mobile networks make their profits from the plans sold not the hardware.
Apple's prices for the iPhone are the same all over the world so the plans offered show the networks profit margins not their costs.

For once everyone can see which companies are rip off merchants as the various plan prices are available online from all over the world.

Vodafone's excuse that the cost are similar for other phones just underlines Rip Off.

I know what you are saying Sue, but apple must make a profit to exist. So, are they selling the phones to Vodaphone at below cost? Or selling them at a profit and bulls**ting about the price.

In other words, is it apple or Vodaphone who are working the loss leader?

A new iPhone might only cost you $199 to buy but expect to fork out $6000 in the long run when you sign up for a two-year plan .

To buy the device outright costs $979 (8GB version) and $1129 (16GB), and it can then fit in with an existing account by adding a data plan .

Buying an iPhone on a two-year contract is possible on three different data plans, with the 250MB package costing $80 per month with the two versions priced at $549 and $699 respectively .

The most expensive monthly option comes with the lowest entry price - $199 for an 8GB iPhone, but a massive $250 per month with 1GB of data on a two-year plan .

686509 2008-07-09 02:36:00 Why get a device that costs up to $6000 over two years when I already have 3 PCs, two GPS's, an MP3 player and a phone?

Just had to replace a whole bunch of appliances in the home that had given up the ghost/developed incurable faults a while back but we saved up for a holiday instead.

So now I know that buying an iPhone would cost me more in two years, than it is going to cost me to cook in the oven, on the gas hob, and wash all our clothes over the next 10 years .....:waughh:

Sometimes I think we get a tad over excited by all this technology.

686510 2008-07-09 02:39:00 Everyone is screaming blue murder at Vodaphone regarding the plan charges. I agree, horrendous, ridiculous are 2 words that come to mind.

No one has commented on apple's part in this game. It was reported in June that the new 3g iphone cost US$173 to manufacture. Pretty narrow magin when sold at NZ$199. In fact, around a $28 loss with the US$ at NZ$0.76c

Now, someone tell me (with a straight face, and their hand on their heart) that the phone companies are not doing payola to apple. Thereby copping all the flak over the matter. Perhaps the flak should be shared by apple?

Or am I just a silly old coot?

If you are asking are the Telcos subsidising the cost of the iPhone - YES of course they are and Apple has made no secret of that. What they are not doing is giving Apple a 10% take of the monthly revenue which was originally going to be the plan instead of the phone subsidy.

The issue every clued up New Zealander has is what Vodafone is insisting is a "fair" monthly rental subscription ...yeah right.
