685450 | 2008-07-05 20:48:00 | In my opinion Vista is OK. It came on my new Laptop. I have XP on my 3 PC's Sure, like all new OS's it lacks support from other manufacturers drivers etc. But whilst I like a few of its features like Gadgets, I have not yet found any compelling reason why I would recommend anyone to upgrade to it. I do not need or trust any of Microsoft security features, And do not like or understand DRM. But really what does it do that XP did not do ? |

685451 | 2008-07-05 22:17:00 | But really what does it do that XP did not do ? Outdates both your hardware and software at a single stroke. Causes unnecessary delays in carrying out the tasks you got the computer for in the first place. Any virus author would be elevated to their peculiar peerage to achieve that sort of mischief, never mind that people PAY for vista ! ! |

685454 | 2008-07-07 00:29:00 | Yeah, out of the box Vista sucks. I ended up disabling heaps of things, especially Windows Defender/UAC, transperancy, windows sidebar, etc. Runs very smoothly, feels faster than my XP with a lot of things. It's not important, but shutdowns are faster, though startups are slower (by at least 20 seconds). Lots of useless things with Vista that bug it down, I still don't understand this WEI and why it gives me a 4.7 for gaming graphics and only 3.5 for graphics -> it's telling me my computer will perform better at games than it will with crappy Aero? Don't see the argument about how Vista is different to XP in relation to how it "Outdates both your hardware and software." Maybe you didn't upgrade to XP when it came, because if you did then you'd realise it was the exact same. We had to wait a while for SP1, but when that finally came out it was really good, SP2 -> XP > all. I have noticed Vista has gotten even better for me since SP1. Of course I've been using XP for several years now and have gotten used to doing things in certain ways (most of it doesn't change in Vista) and have simply had to learn some new ways with this and it's no problem at all. In saying that, Vista hasn't struck me as a necessary upgrade. I haven't seen anything in Vista that made me think "Oh wow! Thats great how it does that like that, it should have been more like this in XP!!!". It's a successor to XP and so it should have a lot more going for it than merely looking better (at the cost of performance/battery life on portables). I guess Vista can be compared to Windows ME, it was newer than 98SE and even started coming as standard on many systems, but it didn't fix anything and actually had a few incompatibility issues, most people just skipped that OS till XP because ME wasn't seen as much of an upgrade -> many will be sticking with XP and make their upgrade to Windows 7 when it's out, even though thats years away. |
