814939 2009-09-28 23:12:00 How old is the laptop ?

My battery started playing up about 18 months after purchase.
Not sure about parents as they never used it on battery at all until one day I tried to use it on battery and it died pretty much straight away. It was about 4 years old though.

On the other side of the coin, people I know that use their laptop on battery all the time, like my wife, the battery still lasts as long as it did when it was brand new. The wife's laptop is 3 & 1/2 years old and the battery still lasts over 2 & 1/2 hours which is about what it has done since new.

814940 2009-09-29 08:10:00 I have a 5 year old ipod that is mainly used on mains and still holds a charge for 8 hours of continuous use on battery.

My Macbook is almost always on mains, but is like new when I venture out into the world where I rely on the battery.

Both are lithium and the lappie would have been discharged fully only a couple of times. I think that heat will play a big part in degrading battery life. My lappie is always on a fan cooled cooling stand.

814941 2009-09-29 17:46:00 NiCad batteries suffer hugely from the cold, it drains the hell out of them, I know as my battery drill last a lot shorter time in winter than summer and laptops would be the same, not sure about LiIon batteries though gary67 (56)

Easy enough to do after all.

814943 2009-09-30 05:59:00 The ideal storage voltage for the LiIon cells found in laptop batteries is about 3.7v. Storing them close to full charge (4.2v) or low charge (2.7v) will shorten the lifetime, particularly if you leave them low or empty for too long.

They also don't like excessive heat.

For those who are interested: this (www.candlepowerforums.com) thread, and the others linked to from the bottom of the first post, are an excellent resource for those interested in LiIon battery cells, especially 18650 cells. While the site is primarily geared towards their use in flashlights, these are also the same cells used in laptop battery packs.

814944 2009-09-30 07:43:00 I don't think you need to cycle the battery at all but I do agree with not leaving the laptop plugged into power all the time and not use the battery at all.
If you are going to do this then remove the battery so that it is not constantly being charged.
That's what I do. It's important not to leave the battery fully charged or not charged. Optimum is 41% for long life. Mine is usually about this.

814946 2009-10-01 09:25:00 I think it is the battery charge monitor circuitry which can get confused, even when the cells are still working fine Agent_24 (57)
