814661 2009-10-02 05:33:00 The issue isn't how secure the connection is (all email and internet banking sites I use are secure), the issue is how secure is the computer I'm using? That is, if the computer I'm using has a key logger, it doesn't matter how secure the website is.

I guess if an internet cafe only lets users run in restricted mode, no malware can get installed. Of course malware could have been installed as admin...

I'm going with a group of people, one of them may be bringing a notebook possibly.

edit: what i meant by quoting your post was that if the computer is secure, it is impossible to expose your gmail login credentials regardless of the type of physical connection used.

You're absolutely right. What I was referring to was malware deliberately installed onto machines by the Chinese govt to spy on internet users. I recall reading an article which said that they force internet cafe owners to install special monitoring software onto all of their PCs to keep tabs on what people do - which presumably includes keyloggers and similar.

814662 2009-10-02 05:41:00 And the program they were going to use (the code) was copied from someone else's program (so I read), in other words it was stolen. So they could make their program. But in the end they ditched this program (last time I looked). Because of too many complaints Speedy Gonzales (78)

That "Green Dam" software is slightly different as it was to apply to all PCs, not just ones in internet cafes etc.

814665 2009-10-02 07:54:00 Another (www.netguide.co.nz) reason, not to bother with net access (www.netguide.co.nz)

And if youre on twitter, facebook, etc you'll probably be blocked from going there

814666 2009-10-02 09:44:00 Damn Small (or maybe Puppy - it was a while ago) Linux had a VM on a stick solution that was nice for such a situation.
Runs inside the host OS in the cafe & if you setup a passwd safe type program you can keep your passwords safe from any keyloggers :)

It would also help to have a VPN back here to connect to, or by SSH to a proxy server.
One you own is best, but there are also free and paid services available.
