687047 2008-07-09 13:00:00 Our very own Scott Bartley has an excellent review up (including video) on our site -> pcworld.co.nz Jan Birkeland (4741)
687048 2008-07-09 19:00:00 I have just been looking at the review. Very well done. I can add it to the list of the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and David Pogue of the NT Times. vitalstatistix (9182)

687051 2008-07-10 00:04:00 After reading that review I'm almost convinced its just a phone, A flawed one at that.

Price is quite a bit less then my Nokia, But considering what it can't do that's perfectly fine.

687053 2008-07-10 00:41:00 A well-written, balanced (IMHO), review .

One comment Scott makes:

like all internet related tasks, are subject to choppy performance if signal strength is low . For instance, using the iPhone on the bus journey home each day is a tad flaky as I travel from one cell site to the next . But if I'm stationary, 3G performance is top-notch .

(you mean if you were using the iPhone like a modem with a laptop, like I do with my Woosh modem???? [don't even know whether this is an option with the iPhone])

This comment by Scott is interesting, since we had this discussion ( . pcworld . co . nz/showthread . php?t=90767" target="_blank">forums . pcworld . co . nz) with Paul Brislen a week or two ago, specifically:

@johcar, mobile data will always be more costly than fixed-line data . To offer a mobile plan that delivers ON A PAR with fixed line pricing in the same market is almost unheard of .

Vodafone NZ's 6GB plan was, until recently, the cheapest in the Vodafone family . . . Vodafone Australia's new 5GB plan beats it but that's only a promotional activity as far as I'm aware .

You've chosen to go with Woosh which is, as you say, not fast enough to be "real broadband" (your words) . You've made the decision to take a slower speed for the price . Fair enough, that's what choice is all about . I'd rather pay more and get the faster speeds and the mobility . My brother would rather pay more for fixed line broadband to the house . Claiming that somehow Vodafone is mistreating its customers is a bit absurd - you have alternatives . Nobody is forcing you to be a customer of any particular company .

Cheers

Paul

Paul - I agree I have made a choice of providers (a Hobson's Choice! - I'd love to be able to justify full-speed mobile BB to SWMBO), but I can't see the difference (from a consumers point of view) between the Woosh Wireless/20GB a month @ $54 . 95 (slow BB) plan and the Vodafone/3GB a month @ $69 . 95 plan .

Both services are delivered via the ether .

Why the huge difference in price? It can't all be a price differential based on speed, surely!!!! The same type of cellsites are used for both (AFAIK) and the technology can't be that different . . .

The technology used is very similar (W-CDMA) but the methodology is completely different . You'll notice Woosh doesn't sell its service as being mobile . That's because it's not - no hand off between cellsites, no overheads for managing the constant staying-in-touch that you get with a mobile service .

Vodafone IS offering a mobile service and the overheads eat into a significant proportion of the bandwidth available .

Cheers

Paul

It seems that Vodafone may be overselling the capabilities of the 3G service - since Scott has experienced 'flaky' connections with his 3G iPhone while on the move . . . .

So tell me again why I should pay more for 3G . . . .

I feel so much better now that you have had your input, beeswax :p

So tell me again why I should pay more for 3G.... Because Vodafone says that you should ;) :p

687056 2008-07-10 02:39:00 Because Vodafone says that you should ;) :p

My comment was specifically around why Woosh charges so much less for 'mobile' BB in comparison to Telecom and Vodafone. The reasoning Paul gave doesn't seem to fit with Scott's experience.

So, it's really a 'spin' (smoke and mirrors) jobbie...

...and maybe we could take the meaning of 'jobbie' in the scatological sense... :D
