688745 2008-07-14 07:38:00 We keep getting the message
Windows Vista is bloated and not as good as XP.

Norton av is bloated and too demanding of resources.

Zone Alarm - conflict with Microsoft Update KB951748

Comodo - far too many questions for Mrs Misty

AVG - too slow

Avira anti-vir - does not scan emails

Adobe Premiere Elements - too buggy I have found in a very short time span

Adobe Photoshop 7 - I have a close work colleague who is an expert photographer who was ready to kick the cat with frustration last night with the problems he encountered.

I could go on....

Even in my short time-span (5-6 years) re PC's etc I have noticed a big difference. We could rely and love Zone-Alarm, AVG, Nortons. Live with XP.

Now it always seems more problematic. The knowledge of Joe Public seems to be demanding an increase. Who other than we (and increasingly less me) have the time, patience and resources to keep up with it.

688747 2008-07-14 08:01:00 Having started on both Mac OS9 and Photoshop 5.5 at the same time I can only say that learning any version of Photoshop takes time, LOTS of practice and much patience and perserverance as well as an open mind.

Photoshop can do anything you want it to do, you just need to learn(tutorials, tutors, help) how to do it. The learning curve in Photoshop although varying depending on the user is fairly constant even for someone who has been doing photoshop for 5-6 years full time.

Well, why do you feel the need to change your software all the time?
OK, we eventually have to with an O/S - when the new hardware forces us to - as drivers for the old ones ceases to exist .
And its sensible to have up to date anti-malware apps, but there are good ones about - NOD32, Avast for instance .

But firewalls and such? I still use ZA4 . I have no idea whether or not it has the same problem with MSs latest update, because I have never downloaded an update .

I have had a computer of various types for 23 years, never put an update on any of them .
I have had 8 O/Ss of various kinds too - not all of them by MS .
Of Microsofts I have had so far DOS6 . 22, Win95, Win98, XP .

And no I don't have malware or problems relating to security on my PC either .

I tell my brother - sometimes it isn't always a good idea to rush to get the latest whatever . . . . . . . . . if what you have does the job then don't fix it .

Coming from a computer tech that is a very bad statement to say that it is not necessary to keep MS systems updated .

You have the knowledge and ability to keep your system clean but the average user does not and it is very important that they install the updates on a regular basis .

Updates generally address a security problem of some sort and MS frequently advise an update is critical and they say that for a reason to ensure users are not inflicted by the problems the update addresses .

Misty - again for you incase you missed it.

688752 2008-07-14 09:28:00 CCleaner and Firefox aren't complex at all. And neither is Office 2007 beeswax34 (63)

It could be considered different for a more senior citizen who may be for familiar with the earlier versions of MS office. Athough FF3 is pretty damn good!

An abacus is the only logical choice .

I think somebody here's trying to incite the "L"-word again but that's a dead end for most users . If they think Office or Adobe PS is hard, then don't EVEN send them to Linux .

It's also tantamount to criminal to say that there's no need to upgrade or add updates . Like another poster said, the people who need them should get them . Those who surf and don't stay away from hyperlinks and malware in porn and torrent sites are just asking for trouble . NO form of anti-stuff can protect people from their own proclivity . . . so they need some sortta security . . . even if they muck it up themselves .

Lately . . we've not heard a lot about malware . trojans, spyware, etc, because we are all getting a little long in the tooth, computer-wise anyway . The tech side of F1 is more consumed with iPhones, Bluefang, new MOBOs, the hottest/latest games, etc .

Sadly, if one is going to use the internet and surf with IE on a M$ OPSYS, open attachments and need to use security programs and firewalls that (because of the sheer number of malevolent nasties out there) have themselves grown ponderous and bloated, then there's not too much that can be said .

Security NEEDS to get the upper hand . . even if it takes ALL the RAM and the paging files areas to do so . These people have to be protected even if their puter then becomes as slow as an abacus .

However, the very best thing is to become a computer whiz-tech or IT security/professional, use Linux - on an Apple, don't surf, do NO banking online, etc . , but that's not an open door for most people . They just wanna be USERS!
