Photonic technology that has terabit per second capacity...not a dream, and it seems it's already basically installed now in existing FIOS networks.

All they need is this little device to ramp-up speeds thru the switches...and here's what appears to be the answer. :drool

It could speed up the backbone.

Also, it would be further encouragement to anyone interested in installing FiOS throughout the country.

Some places do already have FiOS, Central Wellington does. I've heard that Palmerston North has a company that follows road workers around putting fiber in all the holes they dig. It takes most of the cost out of installation.

Now if only the govt thought of doing something similar.

Also, it could drastically reduce the cost of broadband, as everything comes to NZ via giant FiOS cables running over the tasman. The existing infrastructure would be able to upscale at almost no cost. Hopefully that would translate to more bandwidth at less cost.
