815940 2009-10-01 09:00:00 Client Laptop
Vista Home Prem. No SP installed.
Acer Aspire 5710G

Runs slowly - obviously malware known, general clean

Client main issues are shutting down randomly, sometimes very often, even at start up.

And back light turns off on screen. Can sometimes reappear with function +F6 key, however sometimes does not. Turns off, and on randomly at times.

-----

Tried using clients laptop, problems are seen and detected.

Backlight issues is believed to be from either

A) Malware issues
B) Driver issue
C) Hardware issue.
D) OS issue as seen in some posts found on the internet.

However, my main concern at the moment is to fix the shutting down issue.

I found out after a bit of troubleshooting with power - from balanced, to high performance - shutting down increased. Looked under the hood, CPU fan NOT working - I guess emergency shutdown.

My experience does not lie in the hardware side - that said, I'm not new to it.

What action should I take to fix this fan issue?

I have fans running on at the moment, which is doing the job of running it. No longer does it shutdown. LOL. However, found the manual here:

www.intellcity.ru
Page 65

Should I take it off, give it a clean. See if it works? I am unable to change any speed, or find any setting for the fan in the BIOS.

If that doesn't work. I am unable to replace the fan myself because I don't stock hardware... lol. What are my next options?

Thanking you people...

Chris

815941 2009-10-01 09:06:00 Boot into safe mode / networking, then post a HJT log. We'll soon find out if its infected. Altho I doubt malware would affect the backlight. If this is a client's laptop, shouldnt you know what to do?? Speedy Gonzales (78)
815942 2009-10-01 09:20:00 Thanks Speedy, but I'm fine with virus removal and OS issues. That's not where my problem lies.

I do work experience at an IT department, were I learn about the hardware and networking side. Both of which, I can't really cover by my 17YO self in my little world of IT.

I'm starting my own little business in PC support. I expressed I'm not very knowledgeable in the hardware area, but requested I look in to it to at least diagnose the problem. I have done so, and I can pass them on local PC companies who can help them with that hardware problem if needed.

This is why I'm asking you people, who have a wide range of knowledge, of the options in this instance. It's working as per normal with my 2 little fans on it, but that's not substantial. Before I take the time to clean it, I thought I'd get a little advice first.

815943 2009-10-01 09:25:00 CPU fan NOT working Thats not good - looks like its overheating and the thermal cutoff is kicking in causing it to save its self, (shuts down) - more or less confirmed by the use of your other fans.

You need to get the cooling working other wise you wont get any where.

Check the fans are not full of crap, and stopping them from working.

815944 2009-10-01 09:29:00 Thermal cutoff. Got it.

Right, so I'll give it a clean. If still nothing; new fan?

P.S she said if I can't fix it (which she should I hope I couldn't) she'd throw it down the stairs, and claim insurance. LOL...

I'll give it a shot eh?
Chris09 (15218)
815945 2009-10-01 09:33:00 Plug in a known working fan, if it spins up - replace it.

If she throws it down the stairs, make sure you catch it - might be worth fixing :p

Edited: but get the data off first - insurance companies dont recover data.

815946 2009-10-01 09:52:00 Alright. Cleaned it. ALOT of crap blocking all it's vents. Cricky!

However, put it back. It spins when turned on for a few seconds, then turns off.

Faulty fan then?

I had the exact same thing with the mrs laptop tonight giving it a clean. Acer something as well. Turned out a stick of ram died so check that, sympton was start up, fan spin for like 2 seconds and here hard drive spin up then nothing at all except power light on

815948 2009-10-01 11:17:00 Yeah, mine goes alright. I seems to be only the fan, not cooling, and therefor doing this thermal cut over thing. So because I'm still learning.

I take it if the fan spins for 2 seconds, but everything else goes, the fan is faulty? I've cleaned all it's gateways, and I find it weird how it would just go then stop. But I suppose that is the surge of power?

Well I found out it does have some infections, but just needs some Vista tweaking anyway.

Running BurnInTest now. 2 Fans covering the cooler - what I believe we call a hintsink, though I'm not use to these tiny things in laptops, and have Core Temp running to record and monitor the temperature. So actually, I reckon a new fan will do the job.. now where to find one...
Chris09 (15218)
815949 2009-10-01 20:22:00 You can't deduce that the fan is faulty because it only runs for a couple of seconds. An equally valid deduction would be that it is OK (it does spin up).

You need to take into account that laptops are designed to run with less need for cooling to keep battery loads down. It is common to hear a fan noise then silence as the temp controller kicks in and assesses things. What do temp progs e.g. Core Temp) say about cpu temp? Does the fan come on if you heavily load the cpu?

Good that you cleaned it out though. If the machine runs for a while with no shutdowns then it is probably controlling cooling/loading OK!
